Consumers Are Pressed for Meal-Time Prep
Not only are consumers cooking less often, they are spending less time
on meal preparation
• In the 1970s, evening meal prep averaged two to three hours; by 1985 the
time had dropped to one hour; in 2002 the average meal preparation time was
30-40 minutes
Consumers increasingly report a shortage of time for meal preparation
• 53 percent like to cook at home, but do not have the time
• 21 percent of these consumers would like to prepare food at home but do not
have the skill
