This document is being issued to assist those who have responsibility for database input for the Loop
Survey. Included are explanations on the use of the input screens, navigating within and between survey
samples and editing data.
. , p
Microsoft Access has been u f i for the Loop Survey database. The preferred method for inputting most
of the data is with the use of a mouse. Point and click data entry with drop down boxes containing valid
entries is available for several of the input items. The keyboard will also be used to populate some of the
required fields and may be used for all data entry.
Any field with a drop down box may be populated by clicking within the field and typing in a valid entry.
The keyboard may also be used by pressing the Tab key until the desired field is highlighted. Either type in
the correct data or press the F4 key to access the drop down box. Use the Up Arrow or Down Arrow keys
to go to the correct entry and press the ENTER key.
Validation tests are performed for required entries and data inputs are compared with permissible values
prior to acceptance and storage of the data For example, selecting 45C in the FRC field requires that the
Item Type contain an item in the 45C drop down box. Entering BURTED COPPER CABLE in the Item
Type requires acceptable entries in the Size, Gauge and Item Length fields, and so on. Failure to provide
valid information for a required field will cause the display of an error message that must be responded to
before data entry may continue.
The input mask consists of the Loop Survey screen and the Loop Make-up screen (see attached for -
examples of these forms). The Loop Survey screen contains the Sample Number, C i t ID and Air Miles
fields. Navigation buttons that permit movement between samples are located at the bottom of this screen.
The Loop Make-up screen includes fields for inputting the Segment Number, Item Number, Field Reporting
Code (FRC), Item Type, Item Class, S i Gauge, Length, Address, CLLI code and Air Miles. It also
contains buttons for creating a new segment number or item number, for signifying the completion of input
for the current sample make-up and for ending the session. In addition, navigation buttons that permit
movement between items or segments within the current sample are located at the bottom of this screen.
The following is a description of the fields and buttons on these forms:
LOOP SURVEY SCREEN
1. Sample Number - The alpha-numeric listing that appears in the top left corner of the preprinted
"schematic" makeup form. The two alpha characters represent the state and the numeric characters
represent the sequential number of samples in that state (e. g.. GA73 is the 73rd sample in Georgia).
This field may not be edited.
2. Circuit ID - The Telephone Number/Cirdt ID that appears at the top of the preprinted "schematic"
make-up form. This field may not be edited.
