SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE:

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA):
Inquiry sessions for those interested in joining the Catholic faith are
held frequently. We also invite those who have not been actively
practicing their Catholic Faith to attend these sessions. Please call
the parish office for additional information on the sessions, times,
dates, and to register.
VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD & RELIGIOUS LIFE:
Any young man contemplating a call to the Priesthood or any young
person interested in the Religious Life is encouraged to call the pastor

MISSION STATEMENT
Loved and chosen by God, we are the Parish of Christ the King In Springfield, Illinois.
Through Baptism, we share responsibility for continuing the mission of Jesus.
We are called to be stewards who foster and support the gifts given to each by the Spirit.
TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME.
We hear the gospel that follows the story of the miraculous feeding of the 5000.
It is the account of one of Peter’s professions of faith and tells us so much more
about Jesus, for Peter boldly proclaims “He is truly the Son of God.” (Mt. 14:33)
The disciples of Jesus are ordered to precede him to the other side of the lake.
Jesus remains on shore in deep prayer. The boat starts to toss and turn. For Matthew
the boat symbolizes the church as it struggles to survive in a dangerous and
hostile environment. Jesus comes to the disciples walking on water; they become
frightened and assume it is a ghost and their response is fear. Jesus tells them,
“Do not be afraid.”
Peter demands Jesus prove himself by inviting him to come to him [Peter] on
the water. Peter gets frightened and begins to sink. He cries out to Jesus for help.
Jesus catches him and scolds him for his lack of faith. Peter is reprimanded not
because he has weak faith but because he doubted Jesus was coming to them on
the water. For Matthew this story is about having courage and believing that the
Lord is present in the church. This is especially challenging when the church
seems to be sinking and getting battered from all sides.
Peter so well represents believers who doubt. We doubt because we are afraid
and we are afraid because the forces that surround us seem so vast and powerful
that they are beyond our control. We feel as though we are sinking. The story says,
“Take courage it is I; do not be afraid.”
AUGUST 15, MONDAY, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. This is a holyday of obligation for all Catholics in the
United States. Due to the fact that the holyday falls on a Monday, the obligation
to attend mass is lifted for Catholics in our diocese. Mass for the Assumption
will be celebrated at 6:30am. In 1950 Pope Pius XII defined the dogma of
the Assumption of the Virgin Mary “when the course of her earthly life was
finished was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the
Lord as Queen of all things.”
THE 2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR is soon upon us. Christ the King School formally
starts with our registration day on Thursday, August 18th in the gym. Several of our
grades as well as preschool on Tuesday/Thursday still have openings available.
Let us pray that our staff, students and families have a successful year of learning
and coming to know more about Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life!
A BIG AND GRATEFUL THANK YOU from myself and my entire family on
the expressions of sympathy, masses, prayers and monetary offerings on the
recent death of my mother: Rosie Lantz. She lived a long and full life and now
she enjoys the peace of heaven. A special thank you as well to the funeral
luncheon committee for accommodating so many, and to all who provided
dishes—Thank you! What a great parish family we have at Christ the King!!!

THE VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL COMMITTEE invites you to celebrate
the success of our 2011 program with a Doughnut Sunday following the
9:30am mass this Sunday, August 7. Hopefully the children, teens and
adults who participated in the program can wear their VBS shirts to mass

Fall Bible Study for Women
The CTK Adult Faith Formation Committee will be hosting a fall study for
women called A Biblical Walk Through the Mass by Dr. Edward Sri. If
you’ve ever wondered why we say what we say and do what we do during
the Liturgy, this is the study for you! You will go deep into the Scriptural
roots of the Mass and come to understand its beauty and richness like
never before. This study is based on the new translation of the Mass coming
out this Advent. It will run for 5 weeks from 9:15am to 11:00am on
Thursday mornings beginning September 15th. Cost of the materials will
be approximately $18.00. Babysitting will be available at the school. To

It is so easy to miss God’s presence in our lives. Preachers
often talk about great signs signaling major events.
We hear stories about saints who performed miracles or
had wondrous visions. So perhaps, it is understandable
that we expect God to be accompanied by some sort of
obvious fanfare and drama. The story of Elijah listening
for the Lord, reminds us that God is most likely to come
in a “tiny whispering sound.” Are you learning to listen
more closely so that you can hear the Lord’s “tiny whispers?”
What can you do to improve your hearing?
I will hear who God proclaims:
The Lord—for he proclaims peace.
—-Psalm 85:9

how strong the winds, Jesus is there to take our hands and
guide our marriage. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter
Weekend in this area is September 23rd through

Breakfast Benefit for St. Clare’s Clinic
An all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet will be held on Sunday,
August 14 from 8am until noon at Knights of Columbus
Council 364 located at 2200 Meadowbrook Rd. The
cost is $8 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12, and kids five
and under are free. Proceeds will benefit Catholic Charities’
St. Clare’s Health Clinic. For questions, call the

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 7TH, 2011
The incredible success of Christ the King’s 2nd Annual Vacation Bible
School “PandaMania” is the result of the work of more than 120 volunteers.
Our planning committee decided to expand our program this summer
to add an additional 20 preschoolers to our already 150 elementary
age student group. Our 2011 Mission was the “1000 Baby Item Challenge”
to support the services of the Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery. Each
day our children and volunteers brought in more and more donations for
the crisis nursery. By Friday we had collected an astounding 1128 baby
and food items to donate to the nursery! In addition the children worked
together to make 34 hand-tied baby blankets that we sent to the nursery.
Thank you to all of our volunteers! Your support during the planning,
decorating, set-up, the event, and clean-up was invaluable!
Every year our Station Leaders nominate a youth crew leader to receive
the Outstanding Youth Leader Award. The five winners from this year
were: Jesse de Castro, Dani Healey, Zack Scott, Emily Sestak, and Sarah
Treat. These five individuals stood out for a number of reasons from encouraging
their children each day, engaging with their kids, and exemplifying
God’s Love! Great job everyone!

54th Annual Steak Dinner, Holy Trinity Church
in Stonington—Sunday, August 7th, 2011. Serving from
11am to 3pm in air-conditioned hall. Come enjoy a char-broiled
steak dinner, adult 2-hamburger dinner or children’s 1-
hamburger dinner or hamburger only. Dinners include scalloped
potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, fresh tomatoes, bread and ice tea.
St. Mary’s Church in Brussels, IL is having their annual
picnic on Saturday & Sunday, August 13th & 14th. A barbeque
pork plate, fish and beef sandwiches will be served on Saturday
evening. The chicken & beef dinner with dumplings will be
served family style on Sunday from 11am to 3pm.Turtle soup will
be served Sunday evening. (air-conditioned dining room).

What is the timeline for the approval and implementation
of the Roman Missal?
After the Latin Missale Romanum was published in
2002, the International Commission on English in the
Liturgy (ICEL) began its work of preparing a draft
English translation of the text. ICEL presented the
first section—the Order of Mass which contains the
fixed prayers of the Mass, including the people’s
parts—to the English-speaking conferences of bishops
in 2004. The United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops (USCCB) approved the final version in
2006, and the Holy See confirmed this section in
June 2008. The remaining sections were approved
between 2007 and 2009. The USCCB completed its
approval of the Roman Missal in November 2009.The
Holy See granted the final approval of the text in the
spring of 2010. Cardinal Francis George, OMI, president
of the USCCB, announced that parishes must
begin the revised translation on November 27, 2011,
the weekend of the First Sunday of Advent.
