Bertioga was part of the bounds of the municipality of Santos until 1991, when it<br />
reached independence and became a city. Area of dispute between two indigenous ethnicities<br />
during the Portuguese colonization, in the 16th century, São João da Bertioga Fort was built<br />
to protect against Tupinambá Indian attacks. Considered the oldest Portuguese fort in Brazil, it<br />
was registered as a historic site by IPHAN [Body of the Ministry of Culture] in 1940.<br />

What to do?<br />
With a long shoreline, it offers beaches with diverse levels of urbanization. Close<br />
to the city center, Enseada Beach is the longest, ideal for relaxing and leisure moments<br />
for the whole family. Another highlight is in Riviera de São Lourenço, a model of leisure<br />
occupation, internationally awarded, with good structure of restaurants and services.<br />
For water tours, the municipality offers several types of boats, using rivers, canals<br />
and sea. The city is ready for accessible tourism, offering amphibious chairs, kayaks<br />
and other structures. To get to know the islands, the city offers boat tours, leaving<br />
from Bertioga Canal, passing through Prainha Branca, Prainha Preta, Camburizinho,<br />
Guará Island, Rasa Island, Pinheirinho Beach and Iporanga, with 15-minute stops for<br />
swimming.
