antique marionettes were
confined to a dusty closet at
Jan Hus Church in the heart of
New York City's Czechoslovak
neighborhood. In 1984, I
brought my own puppet show
of Czech Tales there. I had
been performing with the
Devil, the Witch and the
Princess, the only three
marionettes of my own. When
I found the hidden trove, I was
overjoyed. I felt I had my work
cut out for me: I had to bring
the puppets back to the stage
and I had to discover their
history. The first task resulted
in the creatio of the
Czechoslovak-American
Marionette Theatre, which as
been growing steadily since
Jan Unger and I first put on
Faust at Jan Hus Church in
