antique marionettes were<br />

confined to a dusty closet at<br />

Jan Hus Church in the heart of<br />

New York City's Czechoslovak<br />

neighborhood. In 1984, I<br />

brought my own puppet show<br />

of Czech Tales there. I had<br />

been per<strong>for</strong>ming with the<br />

Devil, the Witch and the<br />

Princess, the only three<br />

marionettes of my own. When<br />

I found the hidden trove, I was<br />

overjoyed. I felt I had my work<br />

cut out <strong>for</strong> me: I had to bring<br />

the puppets back to the stage<br />

and I had to discover their<br />

history. The first task resulted<br />

in the creatio of the<br />

Czechoslovak-American<br />

Marionette Theatre, which as<br />

been growing steadily since<br />

Jan Unger and I first put on<br />

Faust at Jan Hus Church in<br />

English<br />
