the growing ranks of<br />

enthusiastic amateurs there<br />

are very few competent<br />

professional companies to set<br />

standards of production and<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance. In 1958 Eric<br />

Bramall was responsible <strong>for</strong><br />

the building of Britain's first<br />

permanent puppet theatre, the<br />

Harlequin Puppet Theatre, in<br />

North Wales. It remains the<br />

only one of its kind. Since the<br />

earliest days at the Harlequin<br />

Christopher Somerville has<br />

collaborated with Mr Bramall in<br />

producing exciting puppetry<br />

both on stage and <strong>for</strong> British<br />

and Continental Television,<br />

their work attracting the<br />

attention of enthusiasts all<br />

over the world. In 1963 the<br />

Harlequin Puppet Theatre was<br />

the centre <strong>for</strong> Britain's first<br />

'International Puppet Festival',<br />

when over <strong>for</strong>ty nations were<br />
