existance of puppet shows,<br />

either as a domestic or public<br />

entertainment, in Ancient<br />

Greece or Rome is notoriously<br />

difficult to find. Descriptions<br />

are elusive and archeological<br />

evidence virtually nonexistant.<br />

Yet there are many taltalising<br />

metaphorical allusions of<br />

puppets - especially the<br />

neurospasta or marionettes, to<br />

be found in classical writing of<br />

antiquity. Teh author of this<br />

study has assembled careful<br />

new tranlations of most of<br />

these (together with reference<br />

to the original Latin and<br />

Greek), and by subjecting<br />

them to close examination,<br />

has been able to reach definte<br />

conclusions about the use and<br />

structure of the figures<br />

described. To fill in the picture,<br />

he has provided biographical<br />

notes of the authors<br />

concerned and has attempted<br />
