Taking responsibility
Particularly in these times of increasing globalisation, companies do not only
have rights in the communities in which they operate, they also have obligations
to them. For this reason, it is a matter of course for SIG Combibloc to become
actively involved in humanitarian projects.
Food for thought: “food in box” meets
“school in a box”.
The Christmas project for this year
continued along these lines of assuming
social responsibility. We chose to help
UNICEF with its project “School in a Box”,
which is implemented world-wide and
gives children who have lost everything,
either because of war or natural catastrophes,
a realistic chance for a better future in times
of need. The “School in a Box” contains,
among other things, textbooks, slates, writing
implements and a multiplication and
alphabet table. It costs about 300 US dollars,
which includes part of the costs for setting
up the school teacher training.
A lesson for us all
On the occasion of the fiftieth birthday
celebrations for UNICEF Germany on
30 June 2003 in Berlin, Rolf-Dieter
Rademacher, CEO of SIG Combibloc, presented
a donation of 100,000 euros to
UNICEF ambassador Sir Peter Ustinov.
This will allow UNICEF to pack about 330
“schools in a box”. Each will help 80 primary
schools in their basic teaching work.
250 “school boxes” from SIG Combibloc
will be used in war ravaged Afghanistan to
equip 20,000 girls and boys with slates,
exercise books and pens. Another 80
“schools in a box” financed from the donation
will be sent to Sri Lanka. Here, heavy
rainfall at the end of May caused landslides
that destroyed many villages
and schools. Thanks to assistance from
SIG Combibloc Asia, 6,400 children in the
crisis area will be able to learn for life.
Recipes from all over the world
Not least because of the international
character of our company, it is a foregone
conclusion for us to provide assistance
wherever people, and especially children,
are in need all over the world. This philo-
