July 1961. A hot day. Sound of insects. EDWARD is slumped under<br />
the tree at the bottom of the garden, reading in the shade. He<br />
hears his name being called from the front of the cottage.<br />
POSTMAN (V.O.)<br />
Ed! Second post. Looks like the one!<br />
EDWARD runs the length of the garden.<br />
16 EXT. FRONT GARDEN OF MAYHEWS’ COTTAGE. DAY.<br />

The POSTMAN hands over a brown envelope.<br />
POSTMAN<br />
Big moment, eh?<br />
EDWARD is about to open the letter, hesitates.<br />
EDWARD<br />
Jack, I think I’ll er...<br />
The POSTMAN understands, wheels his bike away, calls over his<br />
shoulder.<br />
POSTMAN<br />
Tell me tomorrow, Ed. And good luck.<br />
17 EXT. GARDEN OF MAYHEWS’ COTTAGE. DAY.<br />

EDWARD pauses with the envelope in his hands. Wishes. Then opens<br />
it. A look of shock.<br />
EDWARD<br />
I don’t believe it...<br />
Dazed, shaking his head, he walks towards the house.<br />
18 INT. SITTING ROOM, MAYHEWS’ COTTAGE. DAY.<br />

The squalor is overwhelming. Pots of old glue, food scraps,<br />
discarded paper, a broken chair, a curtain hanging askew from a<br />
damaged rail.
