eduard
von der heydt
(1882–1964)
Jahrhunderts. 1600 Objekte
beleuchten.
eduard
von der heydt
(1882–1964)
The German/Swiss banker Eduard von der
Heydt, who came from Wuppertal, has left an enduring legacy:
Museum Rietberg in Zurich owes its existence to him,
the Von der Heydt-Museum in Wuppertal bears his name in
honour of him and his family, and the Canton of Ticino owns
Monte Verità in Ascona through his generosity.
Focusing around the most important works
he owned, this exhibition provides the first overview of von
der Heydt’s original art collection, which today can be found
in Wuppertal and Zurich and in museums in other cities too.
His collection, which once included more than 3,000 works
of mostly non-European art but also western painting and
sculpture, was assembled in the first half of the 20 th century.
Today more than 1,600 objects are in Zurich and several hundred
paintings in Wuppertal; 500 works remain in Ascona,
and the rest was lost in the war or was exchanged or sold.
No other collector of this time assembled artworks
from so many different cultures as Eduard von der
Heydt. His motto was “ars una” – there is only one art, no
matter where it comes from. As a banker he was also one of
the first private art collectors who established a strategic
connection between art and capital.
The central focus of this exhibition not only
leads us through the innumerable cultures and genres of world
art but also traces his biography, chronologically divided according
to von der Heydt’s most important homes and centres
of activity: Amsterdam, Zandvoort, Berlin, Ascona and
Zurich.
The exhibition has two main themes. Thanks
to the Provenance Research department which was established
in 2008 at Museum Rietberg, his non-European collection
could be thoroughly explored. The following questions
were asked: where, when and from which dealers did von der
Heydt buy? What was his collecting policy, his acquisition
and loan strategy? On the basis of a wealth of documents
from international archives which were analysed for the first
time, a differentiated, critical historical image of the collector’s
complex personality is presented in the biography which
will be published to coincide with the exhibition. His controversial
role as a board member of the Thyssen-Bank (1930–
1943) will be newly assessed in the light of sources that until
now have been overlooked. The exhibition presents a selection
of documents and photographs which illuminate the many
facets of von der Heydt’s life.
eduard
von der heydt
(1882–1964)
traces durables: le Musée Rietberg de Zurich lui doit son existence;
fortschrittlichen Kunstgeschmack. Der Hamburger
Kunsthistoriker Carl-Georg Heise (1890–1979) publizierte
1918 einen Sammlungskatalog, der nicht weniger als
271 Werke umfasste.
Kunst.
The German/Swiss banker Eduard von der
HeyIn the first two decades of the 20 th century, August and
Selma von der Heydt collected works from French Fauvism
and German Expressionism. This extremely traditional and
conservative couple, with an orientation to the imperial court,
had very progressive artistic tastes. In 1918, the Hamburg art
historian Carl-Georg Heise (1890–1979) published a catalogue
of the collection which listed no fewer than 271 works.
As a collector of European art, Eduard von der
Heydt continued the tradition of his parents. But he complemented
their collection with predecessors of modernism from
the end of the 19 th century and added contemporary works
from Cubism, Constructivism, Surrealism, and New Objectivity.
His purchases were guided by formal-aesthetic criteria.
He was interested in subjects such as women, landscapes, or
floral still lifes. His pluralistic taste was evident in his choice
of both European and non-European art.
ihn wenig.
“ars una” :
1.4
«ars una» :
le concept de
la collection de
von der heydt
Aucun autre collectionneur de l’époque n’a
No other collector at this time collected in
such variety as Eduard von der Heydt: works from Japan,
China, India, New Guinea, Cameroon, Congo – and paintings
by Cézanne, van Gogh and Picasso.
He called the principle on which this expansive
love of collecting was based “ars una” – there is only one
art. He himself decided what was art, and he found it everywhere,
in every century, on every continent. He favoured
works which emanated calm and grandeur, works in which he
found beauty and creative power. He usually preferred representations
of humans, of their faces and bodies, as well as
depictions of gods and ancestors. Art that was purely decorative
or ornamental did not interest him very much.
sollte «kein Museum, kein Konzertgebäude, kein Tempel
«lebendige Kraftquellen, grosse harmonische Zentren, Pole
(Karl With) wirken.
Das Amsterdamer Museum währte nur wenige
Jahre.
In the summer of 1920, Eduard von der Heydt
came to live in Amsterdam with his wife Vera, née von
Schwabach, whom he had married in 1918. He founded a bank
there and at the same time began to collect Asian and African
art on a grand scale. From the start, his narrow house at
Keizersgracht 522 was both home and public museum. He
called the museum “Yi Yuan” (realm of art and literature). It
was intended to be “not a museum, not a concert hall, not
a temple, but a little bit of all three and at the same time a
home and a place of contemplation”. The artworks were to
be “powerful sources of vitality, great harmonious centres,
poles of calm, and theses of admonition and world wisdom”
(Karl With).
The Amsterdam museum only lasted for a few
years. In 1925, Von der Heydt moved to Zandvoort where he
expanded his vision of a life filled with art. In 1927, the couple
divorced by mutual consent. Von der Heydt described himself
as “unsuited for marriage”.
berater
With
Entlassung.
Sammlung. 1939 emigrierte With nach Amerika.
in Köln.
importants
Karl With (1891–1980) fut le premier conservateur
Karl With (1891–1980) was the first curator of
the Von der Heydt Collection. He had expanded his knowledge
of world art while working with Karl Ernst Osthaus (1874–
1921), the founder of the Museum Folkwang in Hagen. With
advised von der Heydt on the development of his collection
and in 1924 published its first catalogue. He later became the
director of the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Cologne, where he
curated some spectacular avant-garde exhibitions. In 1933,
this led to his downfall and summary dismissal. In 1937/38,
von der Heydt commissioned With a second time to prepare
an inventory of his substantial collection. In 1939, With emigrated
to the United States.
Alfred Salmony (1890–1958) was another early
advisor for the Von der Heydt Collection. Although he was a
specialist in Asian art, the first article he published about a
work from the collection concerned an African artwork. As an
art historian who advised von der Heydt, he frequently published
valuable commentaries on the collection in general or
particular items. From 1920 to 1933 he was a curator at the
Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne. There, in 1926, he was
responsible for the first major exhibition in Germany of Asian
art in which von der Heydt also participated. After Salmony
was dismissed by the Nazis in 1933, he emigrated to France
and in 1934 to the United States, but he stayed in contact with
bekam. So schilderte Alfred Salmony 1927 das wunder-
same Ambiente in diesem Kunstcafé. Ein separater Galerieraum
zeigte wechselnde Sammlungsausstellungen.
Hier standen,
bunt gemischt, Skulpturen aus aller Welt aufgereiht. In diesen
Gastgeber.
Nach 1933 verlegte er seinen Lebensmittelpunkt
nach Ascona. 1942 wurde das mitten in der Verteidigungslinie
stehende Haus von den deutschen Besatzern vorsorglich
zerstört. Von der Heydt hatte seine Kunstwerke und
Einrichtungsgegenstände rechtzeitig in Sicherheit bringen
können.
“a house by the
sea” in zandvoort
in the netherlands
Eduard von der Heydt converted three old
fishermen’s cottages in Zandvoort into a larger architectural
group and came to live there in 1925. On the ground floor
was an unusual art café known as the MULURU, a public
Museum Lunch Room, in which one could “drink beer beneath
a Japanese demon” or “be served bread and butter in front of
a sculpture from the South Seas”, according to Alfred Salmony’s
1927 description of its enchanting ambiance. A separate
gallery room showed changing exhibitions from von der
Heydt’s collection. But the Galerie Flechtheim (Düsseldorf/
Berlin) also displayed art there.
In 1933, the photographer Erich Salomon docmented
von der Heydt’s private rooms. A 36-metre-long glass
wall gave an open view on to the North Sea. Here, in a colourful
mixture, stood rows of sculptures from all over the world.
In these rooms lived, as Salomon wrote, a person “for whom
his collection was the meaning of his life”. Numerous photographs
show happy times on the beach and von der Heydt as
a relaxed host with a genial smile.
After 1933 he shifted the centre of his activities
to Ascona. In 1942, his house in Zandvoort, which was
standing right in the middle of the coastal defence lines, was
demolished as a precautionary measure by the German occupiers.
Von der Heydt had managed to move his artworks
and furniture to a safe place in time.
«une maison au
bord de la mer»
à zandvoort en
hollande
Adolf Hitlers.
abwickelte. Es handelte sich unter anderem um Zahlungen
an deutsche Agenten in Mexiko.
3.2
von der heydt
as banker
During his lifetime, Eduard von der Heydt established
four private banks. In Switzerland, however, where
from 1926 he also had a home on Monte Verità, he never had
his own bank. Here, he managed his business affairs through
trusts and accounts with other banks. Although some of von
der Heydt’s business activities were profitable, he was not
the successful banker that he is often portrayed as being. He
was also not – despite the fact that he himself spread the
story – the banker of Wilhelm II, the German emperor who
from 1918 was in exile in the Netherlands and whom he knew
well.
Von der Heydt’s first bank (London 1910–1914)
was confiscated during the First World War, the second
(Amsterdam 1920–1924) was not economically viable and
had to be closed, the third (Zandvoort 1924–1942) had to
be liquidated because of the war, and the fourth, in Berlin
(1925–1928), could only be saved thanks to the takeover by
the brothers Thyssen; but von der Heydt remained on the
board until 1943. This bank, which from 1930 was called
August Thyssen-Bank AG, was close to Nazism and maintained
relations with military intelligence (the “Abwehr”).
From the beginning of the 1930s, Fritz Thyssen was an
important supporter of Adolf Hitler. His brother Heinrich
Thyssen-Bornemisza, the main owner of the bank, lived in
Lugano from 1932.
When Fritz Thyssen – having fallen from favour
– had to flee Germany in 1939, it fell to von der Heydt
to represent the bank. He handled financial transactions for
the Abwehr which to begin with he did through his bank in the
Netherlands and later through the Union Bank of Switzerland
in Locarno. The transactions included payments to German
agents in Mexico. After he had been questioned in October
1943 by the Swiss federal police because of tip-offs from the
US administration, he left the board of the Thyssen-Bank in
November of that year.
l’on aurait pu croire.
grâce à l’intervention des frères Thyssen qui la rachetèrent;
vorderasiatische Frauenfigur.
In the late 1920s and the 1930s, von der Heydt
also made contact with two avant-garde “world art” dealers:
Carel van Lier (Amsterdam) and Charles Ratton (Paris). Both
moved in artistic circles and this led to them to specialise in
tribal art as collectors and dealers.
In 1927, Carel van Lier (1897–1945) opened a
gallery in the “Rokin”, a street in the centre of Amsterdam
where many art dealers had their premises. In the same year
he exhibited his collection in the Stedelijk Museum, a sensation
for an art museum at this time. Von der Heydt bought
some individual pieces from this collection.
First acquisitions from Charles Ratton (1895–
1986) in Paris are documented around 1930. Ratton specialised
in African, Oceanic and North American artworks and
moved in Dada and Surrealism circles. Von der Heydt bought
some further works from Ratton after the war, including a
small decorated Near-Eastern female figure.
deux marchands
d’«arts premiers»
bijoux, provenant d’Asie occidentale.
leihgabenpolitik
Von der Heydt hatte am Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs
sein gesamtes Vermögen in London verloren. Seither
in Aussicht stellte.
Schweiz. Physisch waren zwar noch gewichtige Teile der
Sammlung in ganz Europa verstreut, viele Werke hatte der
Sammler jedoch aufgrund der nationalsozialistischen Kulturpolitik
bereits aus deutschen Museen abgezogen.
3.4
loan policy
At the end of the First World War, von der Heydt
had lost his entire fortune in London. From then on he was
driven by the fear that this could happen again. This is why he
always ensured that his investments were distributed among
several companies and that the artworks he owned were kept
in different places in various countries so that the risk of loss
was minimised. After the rapid expansion of his collection,
he had, by 1925, developed a unique and prudent loan policy.
By the end of the 1930s he had loaned artworks to at least
70 different institutions. His collection now included around
2,500 items. The museum directors with whom he often kept
up an intense correspondence were delighted with his loans,
especially since von der Heydt intimated there might also be
gifts in the future. The loans gave him certain advantages: he
gained influence in the museums, his works were researched
by scholars, and being in a museum increased their value.
For tax reasons, von der Heydt often did not
make purchases or loans under his own name but used that
of his bank or a company. In 1938, he set up a joint-stock
company in the Netherlands, the Museum von der Heydt N.V.,
Eysden, to which he transferred all his artworks. In 1940, a
Swiss joint-stock company, the Ratio S.A., became owner
of the collection. Thus the rights to the collection were now
in Switzerland. Important parts of the collection were still
physically spread all over Europe but the collector had already
withdrawn many works from German museums because of
the cultural policy of the Nazis.
3.4
in Deutschland.
jedoch an mangelndem Interesse.
j.f.g. umlauff
in hamburg
At the beginning of the 20 th century, J.F.G.
Umlauff in Hamburg was one of the leading dealers in ethnographic
art in Germany. Von der Heydt made his first acquisition
there in 1924, some three dozen sculptures from the
Congo. In 1926, he acquired more than a thousand further objects:
ethnographic art from the South Seas – von der Heydt’s
largest single purchase. Soon after this, the art historian
Carl Einstein (1885–1940) wrote a catalogue for the collection.
The art dealer Alfred Flechtheim (1878–1937) exhibited
the most important works of the collection in his gallery in
Berlin and passed on the exhibition to the Kunsthaus Zürich
(1926). The aim of this was to draw attention to the collection
with the intention of then selling it on for a profit. This failed,
however, because of lack of interest. Parts of the South Seas
collection were later lost in Paris; the remaining works are
now in museums in Cologne, Paris, St. Gallen and Zurich. As
this example shows, von der Heydt did not only collect art but
also exchanged and sold it; for the banker, collecting was another
part of his financial activity.
the role of
the life of
von der heydt
At the end of the 1920s and at the beginning
of the 1930s, along with Zandvoort and Ascona, Berlin was
von der Heydt’s centre of activity. By now divorced, he led a
busy bachelor life, took part in society gatherings, and was
a welcome guest in artistic, literary, diplomatic and business
circles. The art market boomed and von der Heydt made
numerous acquisitions of which he loaned many to the
Nationalgalerie in Berlin, especially for the “Gallery of the
Living”, a department for contemporary art that was very
progressive for its time.
Eduard von der Heydt had several homes, including
a weekend house next to the waterside golf course
at the Wannsee. Built in 1927 by the architect Karl Hoffmann,
the house was enlarged and furnished in Bauhaus style by
Marcel Beuer in 1929. Chairs and tables as well as made-tomeasure
cupboards by Breuer were in vogue at the time. Few
artworks were displayed in the house – and these were all
the more effective for this reason. This was the place where
the national-conservative baron and banker showed himself
to also be a purist follower of modernism.
A Berlin, Eduard von der Heydt avait différents
und Gesinnung her ein national-konservativer Rheinländer
mit aristokratischem Klassenbewusstsein. Diese Einstellung
brachte ihn 1926 dazu, dem monarchistischen Verband
«Der Stahlhelm» beizutreten, womit er als Kriegsveteran
seine Anhänglichkeit an das untergegangene Kaiserreich demonstrierte.
Nach der «Gleichschaltung» des «Stahlhelms»
1933 lag eine Mitgliedschaft in der nationalsozialistischen
Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP) nahe.
«gesichtswahrend» austreten.
By descent and conviction, Eduard von der
Heydt was a national-conservative Rhinelander with an aristocratic
class consciousness. These attitudes led him in 1926
to join the monarchist association “Der Stahlhelm”, (the Steel
Helmet), a step with which the war veteran demonstrated
his loyalty to the vanished monarchy. After the “Gleichschaltung”
by the Nazis of the Steel Helmet in 1933, membership
of the National Socialist Workers Party (NSDAP)
seemed obvious. Like the German emperor, von der Heydt saw
a chance of strengthening national-conservative power in
Germany through Adolf Hitler and his party. He joined the
party not in Germany but in the Dutch branch of its foreign
organisation. Although in 1933 he had certain hopes for it, he
was ideologically not convinced by Nazism, and personally
disappointed by it in 1934. From an economic point of view, the
new politics were, as he put it himself, a catastrophe. He
nevertheless remained conformist and did not openly distance
himself from the regime. He was too closely linked with
Germany: through his business transactions for the August
Thyssen-Bank, his important loans to museums in Berlin and
elsewhere, and his family.
In 1937 Eduard von der Heydt became a Swiss
citizen and thus lost German citizenship. He was also expelled
from the NSDAP. He appealed against this expulsion and as
a result was able to save face by then resigning voluntarily
in 1939.
zuzuwenden. Zu seinen Werken zählen Die Kunst der Naturvölker
Eduard von der Heydt was proud of the works
of Asian and African art that he had acquired in the 1920s and
wanted to make them publically known through scholarly
publications. He chose two leading authorities from Berlin to
carry out this task.
The German art historian, founder and co-publisher
of Ostasiatische Zeitschrift, William Cohn (1880–1961),
wrote the collection catalogue Asian Sculpture. He, too, was
dismissed from his job as curator at the Berliner Völkerkundemuseum
by the Nazis in 1933 and in 1938 he emigrated to
Britain. From 1946 he worked in Oxford where he founded
the journal Oriental Art and established a museum for East
Asian Art which today is part of The Ashmolean Museum.
The art historian and ethnologist Eckart von
Sydow (1885–1942) worked on the other collection catalogue,
The Art of Primitive Peoples, in 1932. He was the second director
of the Hanover Art Association, the Kestnergesellschaft,
which had been set up in 1916. As a specialist in expressionism
he increasingly turned to psychoanalysis and religious
studies. Among his works were Die Kunst der Naturvölker und
der Vorzeit (1923), Kunst und Religion der Naturvölker as well
as Primitive Kunst und Psychoanalyse. From 1933 he was a
religions. Parmi ses œuvres, on retiendra Die Kunst der
4.4
acquisitions on
the German art
market between
1933 and 1945
Because of the currency exchange controls
that had been introduced in 1931, von der Heydt, as a German
who lived mostly abroad, accrued large balances of so-called
“blocked Marks” which could only be taken out of Germany
at a loss. He used these to buy art in Germany. The condition
was that the artworks remain in the country for five years.
Whereas art from Africa and the South Seas received little
attention in Germany after 1933, Asian art still enjoyed a certain
demand. Von der Heydt bought South-East Asian sculptures
as well as Chinese objects from dealers and at auctions.
At an auction at Paul Graupe in Berlin in March
1935, von der Heydt bought five Chinese artworks. These objects
had belonged to the Jewish couple Rosa and Jakob Oppenheimer
who had left Germany in early 1933. Their possessions
had been confiscated and were auctioned on behalf of
the German tax authorities who kept the proceeds.
A first result of provenance research at Museum
Rietberg came with the uncovering of these facts in 2009.
Since von der Heydt had acquired the works at a so-called
“Jew auction”, the museum contacted the heirs of the Oppenheimer
family, compensated them for the objects bought
at the time and is now their rightful owner.
4.4
acquisitions sur
le marché d’art
allemand entre
1933 et 1945
pays durant cinq ans.
décidé de contacter les héritiers de la famille Oppenheimer;
In the first two decades of the 20 th century, the
“Hill of Truth” in Ascona was a place for anarchists, people
who dreamed of a new world, vegetarians and anthroposophists.
In 1926 von der Heydt bought his first large piece of
land on the hill and soon afterwards he submitted a building
project for approval. Amidst idyllic scenery he erected
a symbol of modernism: a hotel in the Bauhaus style which
was opened in 1929. He installed his art collection in the generous
rooms of the hotel as well as in the lush, blossoming
landscape filled with magnolias and palms. The many international
guests were – as several entries in the guest book
attest – enthralled by the interplay of art and the spirit of the
place, the “sacred earth” (Salmony). Von der Heydt met his
guests in white shorts and a loose shirt, always nonchalant
and smiling. He himself lived a few steps from the hotel in the
Casa Anatta which he had furnished with Chinese paintings
and African and Indian sculptures. At first Ascona was only
a temporary home but from the mid-1930s until his death in
1964 it became his principal residence.
Flechtheim (1878–1937) went back to the time before the
First World War. His parents were already good clients of
Flechtheim, who in 1913 opened a gallery in Dusseldorf
and expanded to Berlin in 1921. Von der Heydt acquired important
works for his European collection from Flechtheim,
for example, the “Pierrot” by Juan Gris, the “Women Ironing”
by Toulouse-Lautrec, and three paintings by Beckmann.
Von der Heydt was not only one of Flecht-
heim’s bankers and clients but also contributed to his gallery
magazine Der Querschnitt – one of the most fascinating art
magazines of the Weimar Republic. The magazine’s illustrations,
juxtaposing contemporary photographs with pictures
of artworks, some of which came from the Von der Heydt
Collection, were unique. The art dealer also organised exhibitions
in the MULURU in Zandvoort during the summer
months. He was also one of the numerous visitors to Monte
Schweiz vermeiden.
5.3
the military
trial and its
aftermath
In 1946 Eduard von der Heydt was arrested in
the Hotel Baur au Lac in Zurich, where he had another permanent
residence, and held in the district prison of Horgen
for 24 days. His offices in Zurich and Ascona were searched.
A military trial was begun because of “conducting or organising
the conduct of military intelligence gathering services
on Swiss territory for a foreign state against another foreign
state, according to Article 301 of the Swiss criminal code”.
It dealt with payments made by the Thyssen-Bank, in which
von der Heydt was a board member, to German military intelligence.
He persistently denied knowing for whom these
payments were destined. In 1948, two years after his arrest,
a military court acquitted him because of lack of evidence.
Historical research into the trial documents
which was begun in the 1970s has shown that von der Heydt
must have known for whom those payments were destined.
The judgement, therefore, has to be called lenient. With
hindsight, this acquittal casts a shadow over von der Heydt’s
life and the taint of opportunism clings to him. A conviction
would have resulted in withdrawal of Swiss citizenship. Had
this happened, von der Heydt would very probably have left
Switzerland, sold his property in Ascona, and taken his artworks
out of the country. But this is something that the Swiss
political and cultural establishment of the time wanted to
avoid.
5.3
At the beginning of the war, von der Heydt
transferred his art purchasing activity to Switzerland. In
1940 he bought several dozen artworks from the Lausanne
collector Gottlieb F. Reber, who was in financial difficulties
and had to sell his well-known art collection. Von der
Heydt bought a crucifix, Chinese vessels, along with sculptures
from the Mediterranean region and the Near East. In
the same year he acquired some 40 objects from the Africa
collector Han Coray whose collection had already been
pawned. In 1945 he succeeded in acquiring some 80 objects
from the ethnographic collection of Nell Walden (1887–1975).
transfer his Indian bronze and stone sculpture collection from
Berlin to the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Zurich. The director
there was Alfred Altherr, a longstanding acquaintance of the
von der Heydt family. Altherr and his successor Johannes Itten
(from 1938) were in close cordial contact with the collector
in Ascona. They organised exhibitions with his loans and
produced catalogues, something which he fully supported.
The permanent presentation of the loans in the modern, newly
erected museum building (1933) also satisfied the highest
aesthetic demands.
With the exhibition “Asian Art from Swiss Collections”
in Berne and Zurich in 1941, a hint was given to von
der Heydt that there was great interest in his collection and
it would be appreciated if its future lay in Switzerland. Since
the 1930s, there had been discussions about showing the
entire collection in Zurich. With the Villa Wesendonck, which
was acquired by the city in 1945, a suitable site for a museum
had been found. That the city council succeeded in persuading
von der Heydt to make Zurich the home for his collection,
and in winning a referendum about the foundation of Museum
Rietberg in 1949, is due to the great commitment of Johannes
Itten as well as the mayors Ernst Nobs, Adolf Lüchinger and
finally Emil Landolt. The political will was there to stand up
for von der Heydt even when he was on trial in 1948.
an plus tôt.
6.3
johannes itten,
founding director
of museum
rietberg
Johannes Itten (1888–1967) was an artist, cofounder
of Bauhaus, art educator and museum director. He
recognised the great potential of the non-European collection
of von der Heydt and was the leading force in the establishment
of Museum Rietberg.
To do this he had to complete a few initial
tasks. He had to win over von der Heydt to supporting the museum
project, something which was anything but easy given
the collector’s complex personality. He had to drive forward
the conversion of the stately Villa Wesendonck into a neutral
looking modern museum; he had to furnish the new museum,
and lead the campaign to win the support of Zurich voters.
And finally, there was a last task, probably the most difficult
one: he had to contact all the museums in Europe and
the United States to which von der Heydt had loaned objects
and recall them. None of the museums was happy about this.
Some refused and had to be persuaded through lengthy negotiations.
Loans in the US were confiscated as German enemy
goods and to this day have not been returned. But apart
from this, the director was very successful and Museum
Rietberg is, in the words of Hans Curjel, “a true gift by Itten to
the city of Zurich”.
6.3
johannes itten,
directeur
Verdienstkreuz.
2008, nach Protesten aus Kunstkreisen, die
von der Heydts opportunistisches Verhalten während der
Zeit des Nationalsozialismus anprangerten, beschloss die
Stadt Wuppertal, den «Eduard von der Heydt-Preis» in «Von
der Heydt-Kulturpreis» umzubenennen. Nicht spezifisch
seine Person, sondern das Mäzenatentum der gesamten
von der heydt’s
later life in
the casa maya
Eduard von der Heydt spent the last years of
his life in seclusion on the shores of Lake Maggiore not far
from the centre of Ascona. Since the 1948 trial he had retreated
from public life. But visitors from all over the world
still found their way to him and he also continued to keep up
a correspondence with people in many countries. Surrounded
by his favourite artworks he lived in the Casa Maya until
his death in 1964.
He had ensured that his fortune was properly
distributed: the city of Zurich received his collection of Asian,
African, American and Oceanic art. His home city of Wupper-
tal became the owner of his collection of paintings and
received capital for future purchases. The canton of Ticino
received the Monte Verità with all its land and the remaining
artworks. The recipients expressed their gratitude: the
municipal museum in Wuppertal changed its name to Von
der Heydt Museum, Ascona and Wuppertal made him an
honorary citizen, the University of Zurich awarded him an
honorary doctorate and the Federal Republic of Germany the
Grand Merit Cross.
In 2008, after protests from the art world
denounced von der Heydt’s opportunist behaviour during
the Nazi period, the city of Wuppertal decided to rename the
“Eduard von der Heydt Prize” as the “Von der Heydt Cultural
Prize” to honour not specifically the man himself but the
patronage of his whole family.
