At the beginning of the war, von der Heydt
transferred his art purchasing activity to Switzerland. In
1940 he bought several dozen artworks from the Lausanne
collector Gottlieb F. Reber, who was in financial difficulties
and had to sell his well-known art collection. Von der
Heydt bought a crucifix, Chinese vessels, along with sculptures
from the Mediterranean region and the Near East. In
the same year he acquired some 40 objects from the Africa
collector Han Coray whose collection had already been
pawned. In 1945 he succeeded in acquiring some 80 objects
from the ethnographic collection of Nell Walden (1887–1975).
The Swedish writer, painter and collector who had previously
been married to Herwarth Walden, the founder of the journal
had lived in Switzerland since 1932. She possessed
important work by “Sturm” artists (especially Chagall
and Kandinsky) as well as hundreds of mostly African and
Oceanic objects.
