2.2 das erste museum: «yi yuan» Im Sommer 1920 liess sich Eduard von der Heydt mit seiner 1918 angetrauten Ehefrau Vera, geborene von Schwabach, in Amsterdam nieder und gründete eine Bank. Gleichzeitig begann er im grossen Stil asiatische und afrikanische Kunst zu sammeln. Das schmale Haus in der Keizersgracht 522 war von Anfang an Wohnhaus und öffentliches Museum zugleich. Dem Museum gab er den Namen «Yi Yuan» (Reich der Kunst und der Literatur). Es sollte «kein Museum, kein Konzertgebäude, kein Tempel sein, aber etwas von allen dreien und zugleich ein Wohnhaus und eine Betrachtungsstätte». Die Kunstwerke sollten als «lebendige Kraftquellen, grosse harmonische Zentren, Pole der Beruhigung und Thesen der Mahnung und Weltweisheit» (Karl With) wirken. Das Amsterdamer Museum währte nur wenige Jahre. Bereits 1925 siedelte Von der Heydt nach Zandvoort um, wo er seine Vision eines Lebens mit der Kunst weiterentwickelte. Die Ehe wurde 1927 in gegenseitigem Einverständnis geschieden. Les œuvres d’art devaient agir comme des «sources d’énergie vivantes, de vastes centres harmonieux, des pôles de détente, mais aussi des thèses de mises en garde et de sagesse universelle» (Karl With). Le musée d’Amsterdam n’existera que quel- ques années. Dès 1925, Von der Heydt s’installe à Zandvoort, où il développe sa vision d’une vie en symbiose avec l’art. Lui et sa femme divorcent, d’un commun accord, en 1927. Von der Heydt se qualifiait lui-même d’«inapte au mariage». 2.2 the first museum: “yi yuan” In the summer of 1920, Eduard von der Heydt came to live in Amsterdam with his wife Vera, née von Schwabach, whom he had married in 1918. He founded a bank there and at the same time began to collect Asian and African art on a grand scale. From the start, his narrow house at Keizersgracht 522 was both home and public museum. He called the museum “Yi Yuan” (realm of art and literature). It was intended to be “not a museum, not a concert hall, not a temple, but a little bit of all three and at the same time a home and a place of contemplation”. The artworks were to be “powerful sources of vitality, great harmonious centres, poles of calm, and theses of admonition and world wisdom” (Karl With). The Amsterdam museum only lasted for a few years. In 1925, Von der Heydt moved to Zandvoort where he expanded his vision of a life filled with art. In 1927, the couple divorced by mutual consent. Von der Heydt described himself as “unsuited for marriage”. 2.3 karl with und alfred salmony: zwei wichtige berater Karl With (1891–1980) war der erste Kurator der Sammlung Von der Heydt. Seine Kenntnisse über die Kunst der Welt hatte er bei Karl Ernst Osthaus (1874–1921) erweitert, dem Gründer des Folkwang Museums in Hagen. With beriet von der Heydt beim Aufbau seiner Sammlung und gab 1924 den ersten Sammlungskatalog heraus. Später wurde er Direktor des Kunstgewerbemuseums in Köln, wo er aufsehenerregende avantgardistische Ausstellungen realisierte. Dies wurde ihm 1933 zum Verhängnis und führte zu seiner sofortigen Entlassung. Von der Heydt engagierte With daraufhin 1937/38 ein zweites Mal für die Inventarisierung seiner umfassenden Sammlung. 1939 emigrierte With nach Amerika. Alfred Salmony (1890–1958) befasste sich ebenfalls früh mit der Sammlung Von der Heydt. Obwohl er Asienspezialist war, publizierte er 1923 als Erstes einen Artikel über ein afrikanisches Werk. Als kunsthistorischer Berater von der Heydts veröffentlichte er immer wieder Erhellendes über die Sammlung oder über einzelne Objekte. Von 1920 bis 1933 war er Kustos am Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst in Köln. Dort zeichnete er 1926 verantwortlich für die erste grosse Ausstellung asiatischer Kunst in Deutschland, an der sich auch von der Heydt beteiligte. Salmony wurde 1933 von den Nationalsozialisten entlassen. Er emigrierte nach Frankreich und 1934 nach Amerika, blieb aber bis zu seinem Tod mit von der Heydt in Kontakt. 2.3 karl with and alfred salmony: two important advisors 2.3 karl with et alfred salmony: deux conseillers importants Karl With (1891–1980) fut le premier conservateur de la Collection Von der Heydt. He had expanded his knowledge of world art while working with Karl Ernst Osthaus (1874– 1921), the founder of the Museum Folkwang in Hagen. With advised von der Heydt on the development of his collection and in 1924 published its first catalogue. He later became the director of the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Cologne, where he curated some spectacular avant-garde exhibitions. In 1933, this led to his downfall and summary dismissal. In 1937/38, von der Heydt commissioned With a second time to prepare an inventory of his substantial collection. In 1939, With emigrated to the United States. Alfred Salmony (1890–1958) was another early advisor for the Von der Heydt Collection. Although he was a specialist in Asian art, the first article he published about a work from the collection concerned an African artwork. As an art historian who advised von der Heydt, he frequently published valuable commentaries on the collection in general or particular items. From 1920 to 1933 he was a curator at the Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne. There, in 1926, he was responsible for the first major exhibition in Germany of Asian art in which von der Heydt also participated. After Salmony was dismissed by the Nazis in 1933, he emigrated to France and in 1934 to the United States, but he stayed in contact with von der Heydt until his death.
