13. Ego Sum Abbas
(tenor, male choir)
Ego sum abbas Cucaniensis
Et consilium meum est cum bibulis,
Et in secta Decii voluntas mea est,
Et qui mane me quesierit in taberna,
Post vesperam nudus egredietur
Et sic denudatus veste clamabit,
Wafna, wafna!
Quid fecisti sors turpissima?
Nostre vite gaudia
Abstulisti omnia!
Wafna, wafna!
12. Once I swam in lakes
(tenor, male choir)
Solo:
Once I inhabited lakes,
Once I appeared beautiful,
While I was a swan.
Chorus:
Wretched, wretched thing!
But now blackened,
And well roasted.
Solo:
The cook turns and turns me again;
A funeral pyre roasts me well;
Now the steward brings me forth.
Chorus:
Wretched, wretched thing!
But now blackened,
And well roasted.
Solo:
Now I lie on a platter,
And I cannot fly.
I see teeth grinding.
Chorus:
Wretched, wretched thing!
But now blackened,
And well roasted.
13. I am the abbot of Cockaigne
(tenor, male choir)
I am abbot of Cockayne*
And my counsel is with drinkers,
And my wish is to be in the cult of Decius,
And he who will seek me in the tavern in the morning,
will leave naked after Vespers,
And so stripped of clothing, will cry out:
Alas, alas!
What have you done, most vile Fate?
The delights of our life,
You have taken all of them away!
Alas, alas!
*Cockaigne is a medieval mythical land of plenty,
extreme luxury and ease where physical comforts and
pleasures are always immediately at hand. A medieval
Utopia or Never-never-land.
