CBA SYMPHONY & CHORUS OFFICIAL PROGRAM Minor (the “Unfinished” symphony). Other pieces included Delibs’ “March and Procession of Bacchus,” and Kabalevsky’s “The Comedians.” But, the highlight of the evening was guest artist Robert Black’s rendition of Glazounov’s “Concerto for Saxophone.” Black, then a third-year law student at DePaul University College of Law, had the distinction of being the first classical saxophonist to win a Grammy Award – for his performance of “Walton’s Façade” with Chicago pro Musica. His performance that April night with CBA Symphony Orchestra was ample evidence of why he won that distinction. The Chicago Bar Association Symphony Orchestra in Rehearsal with Robert Black (spring 1988). Following its spring 1988 concert, the orchestra prepared lighter and more popular pieces for its very first appearance at the annual Law Day ceremonies on May 2 nd that year. And, after many fine speeches, presentation of the Liberty Bell Award and a rousing rendition of Stars and Stripes Forever, the orchestra’s second season came to a close. In later years, the orchestra added a second spring concert, typically playing pops and scheduled close to the Law Day performance, bringing its full regular schedule to five concerts annually. However, that second season established the basic performance and rehearsal schedule that has continued successfully for 20 years. The rest, as they say, is history. ▄ 50 | CBA SYMPHONY & CHORUS
