25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OFFICIAL PROGRAM
Welcome to a very special night for the Chicago Bar Association. Twenty-five years
ago this year, a group of talented musicians–who also happen to be very talented
lawyers–conceived of the unique idea of starting a symphony orchestra within the
Chicago Bar Association. Twenty-five years, scores of concerts and many recordings
later, we are here to celebrate with the CBA Symphony Orchestra and its members
as they reach this important milestone.
The Orchestra, and its partner in the arts the CBA Symphony Chorus, which celebrates
its fifth anniversary this year, provide an important artistic outlet for lawyers,
judges, law professors and law students in Chicago who love the law, but not to the exclusion of their music.
These wonderful musicians rehearse week after week–in courtrooms and bar association meeting rooms–
to feed their passion for music, and to provide us with remarkable performances.
During my time as an Officer of the Chicago Bar Association, I have met Bar Officers from cities literally
all over the world. I have yet to learn of another Bar Association that can boast of having a symphony
orchestra and chorus. A group of foreign Bar leaders joined us in Chicago for the CBA Symphony Orchestra’s
twentieth anniversary concert five years ago, and when we see those leaders at conference to this day
they remark about how amazed they were to see how talented the members of the CBA are. This past
fall, when a delegation from the CBA visited Cuba to meet with lawyers, judges and law professors in
Havana, we gave our hosts CDs recorded by the CBA Symphony Orchestra and the Barristers’ Big Band
as our thank you gifts.
My heartfelt thanks and admiration go out to the members of the CBA Symphony Orchestra and Chorus,
and I wish you a wonderful concert this evening. You are a big part of what makes the CBA so special.
