to teaching or research positions in the social
sciences in American and European universities.
These grants were made from a special research
aid fund appropriated by the Foundation to be
used in allfieldsof work.
The appropriations made in 1935 to provide
grants in aid in the social sciences were as follows:

Grants in aid in the fields of social security, international
relations, and public administration (for use in 1935) $45,000
Grants in aid in the fields of social security, international
relations, and public administration (for use in 1936) 60,000
Grants in aid in the social sciences, Europe (to terminate former
programs, available until December 31, 1937) 25,000
Total $130,000
4. Advisory and Planning Bodies
The Social Science Research Council since its
creation in 1923 has played a central role in the
development of the field of the social sciences.
With a total membership of twenty-eight, it has
twenty-one members representing seven national
scientific societies which are concerned with the
social sciences. An
annual conference lasting
several days gives unity to the work of numerous
committees of experts which meet, on an entirely
voluntary basis, several times in the year. The
council has been attempting for more than ten
years to promote research in areas not sufficiently
explored, to improve the methods of work and
