strength lies at present in nationally organized
groups. The non-academic organizations direct
their attention more or less specifically toward
the creation of intelligent public opinion and, for
this reason perhaps, their accomplishments are
better known. The
academic institutions to
which the Foundation has made grants are directly
concerned with research and the training
of students in international affairs; they are only
indirectly interested in educating public opinion.
As a rule Foundation grants have been made
toward the continuing programs of organizations.
In a few instances, however, support for a
specific project, as the Millionth Map
of Hispanic
America under the American Geographical
Society, has been undertaken.
