The Library Association, London
Information Service
As an aid to all phases of the work of the Library
Association of Great Britain, the Foundation
has appropriated $17,625 to be used during
a two-year period in extending the resources of
its information service on library practice. Materials
will be sought in other countries as well
as in Great Britain, and delegated representatives
of the association will report on
specific
aspects of library work in the United States and
in Europe. The
association will thus greatly
strengthen its work on such general problems as
classification, distribution, and local control of
book collections. It also will be enabled to advise
local authorities on the design and fitting of
library structures for various kinds of service in
rural communities, towns, and cities.
The development of these services is due to
the rapid growth of the association during recent
years and to new demands put upon it by workers
in adult education and by the more newly established
colleges of Great Britain. The
establishment
of county library systems also has forced
various local authorities to turn to the association
for guidance. In its new headquarters
adjacent to the National Central Library and
