Pontecorvo, born in Pisa, was the son of a wealthy
Italian Jewish businessman. He moved to
France in 1938 to escape Italy's fascist racial laws.
He served as a correspondent for the Paese Sera
and Repubblica newspapers in Paris, but during
an assignment reporting on a mining strike, he
suddenly understood that images delivered greater
emotional impact than words ever could, and drifted in the direction of photojournalism. He
eventually returned to Italy and led a Resistance brigade during WWII. After
the war, Gillo Pontecorvo began his film career in 1955. In 2006, he died from
congestive heart failure in Rome at age 86. Pontecorvo directed only a handful of feature
movies in a career that spanned decades, earning the nickname of "lazy director."
But he remained involved in the world of cinema, directing documentaries and
heading the Venice Film Festival for several years.
