menler Federasyonu (FMPR)’nin organizasyon yöntemini, politikalar›n› ve demokratik
bir sendikan›n sald›rgan politikalarla üyelerini nas›l korudu¤unu göstermektedir.
This documentary by the Labor Video Project illuminates the struggle for independence
in the longest held colony of the United States. Puerto Rico has been controlled by
the United States for over 110 years and the video covers a mass mobilization of the
independence movement that was held at the same time of the SEIU International
Convention in Puerto Rico. US corporate controlled unions including the SEIU have sought
to take control of the Puerto Rican working class through massive funding and
corrupt sweetheart deals with the capitalist politicians in Puerto Rico. The film looks
at the method of organization and politics of the FMPR -the Puerto Rican 40,000
member teacher's union- and how a democratic union with militant policies can defend
its members.
“The Turning Point” is the story of the 1968 San Francisco State strike which lasted 6
months. Through the use of edited TV news footage, the film shows how students
and the labor movement including the AFT Teacher's union fought for open admissions
and the establishment of an Ethnic Studies program at the campus. The massive
repression by the police is also portrayed and the role of Ronald Reagan who was then
governor of California. Although the strike was successful and new ethnic studies
program was established; working class students today find it increasingly difficult to
attend the university due to the massive increase in fees which are having the affect
of privatizing the California state university.
