SARIA in Spain since 1989
New acquisitions extend range of production
DIMARGRASA has represented SARIA
in Spain since 1989, but the company
only became a wholly-owned subsidiary
of the SARIA Group in 1996. Until
January 2006 when the ARTABRA
and PROARGA group of companies
was acquired, DIMARGRASA was the
sole SARIA representative in Spain.
Valentin Garcia,
Managing Director
DIMARGRASA
Today DIMARGRASA processes category
3 by-products in central Spain.
Category 1 and 2 by-products and
category 3 fish by-products in the
northwest part of Spain and northern
Portugal are processed by ARTABRA.
At ARTABRA, electricity generation
forms an additional area of activity.
PROARGA meanwhile handles both
animal and fish by-products for subsequent
transportation to ARTABRA.
ARTABRA holds a 40% stake in
GESUGA (collection and processing
of fallen animals in the region of
Galicia), 12% in AFAMSA (treatment
and marketing of fish oil and soaps)
and 50% in LIPAN (a company that
markets animal fats and plant oils).
in Marbella, Spain: from left Valentin Garcia (Managing Director DIMARGRASA), Jordi Vaquer (Technical
Manager of the Stocks del Vallés biodiesel plant, Barcelona), Patrick Coelenbier (SARIA France,
President of SIFCO, EFPRA’s French member association), Esperanza Orellana (Animal By-Products
National Commission General Secretary), Niels Leth Nielsen (EFPRA President)
SARIA has always focused on
expanding and securing its position
in the Spanish market, a tough task
given the considerable fragmentation
in this sector. In Spain, there are currently
55 plants that process animal
by-products – 22 for categories 1
and 2 and 33 category 3 facilities –
not including processing facilities
run by slaughterhouses themselves.
● Valentin Garcia
“ Despite the complexity of the Spanish market, we face the
challenges with optimism and are certain that SARIA can
extend its favourable position further.” Valentin Garcia
