EUROPE Kervalis works for the petfood industry Vitré specialises in by-products from poultry slaughter Christophe Brebion, Plant Director Vitré Vitré, France The Vitré facility (KERVALIS) in Brittany is an important supplier to the petfood industry. The site specialises in collecting and processing poultry meat (category 3). Around a quarter of the total tonnage is handled by the associated transfer centre at Locminé. St. Hilaire du Harcoët t. The facility’s maximum capacity is 500 tonnes per day, with its nine dryers, three presses, one cutter and one mill in operation five days a week. The plant operates a wastewater treatment facility with a capacity equivalent to 20,000 inhabitants and an air purification system comprising a bioreactor, chemical wash and biofilter. Over the past few years, we have invested extensively in production, infrastructure and the environment, including building a roofed hall for accepting raw materials, installing a new non-continuous 20,000-litre boiler and redesigning all transportation routes with a new access road for trucks. From 2005, the plant was completely renovated at a cost of almost 7 million euros. Merging Lorient and Concarneau and concentrating processing at one site in 2006 naturally increased the quantity of material being processed. Concarneau is one of two plants in France that turns by-products from fish processing into fishmeal and fish oil. Fishmeal is used in aquaculture, animal feed or the petfood industry, while fish oil is primarily used in the oleochemical industry, although also in petfood. Our catchment area is wide and extends from the Seine maritime regions to Vendée and Rungis. The reduction in fishing quotas and falling catches caused a drop in tonnage, for which the growth of aquaculture has only partially compensated to date.
