In order to help you to compare these figures in the different
units, the following conversions can be used.
1 bar = 14.5p.s.i.
1 pound = 4.45 Newtons
So, 2 bar = 2 x 14.5 = 29 p.s.i. and
10,000 Newtons = 10,000 = 2242 lbs force
4.45
Calculate the force created by an actuator:
Oil Inlet
Ram
Load
a) which has an area of 7 square inches (3" diameter) when
it is subjected to a pressure of 3000 p.s.i.
b) which has an area of 0.005m2 (80 mm diameter) when it
is subjected to a pressure of 200 bar.
(Note: 1 bar = 100kN/m2)
a)
b)
If you found those calculations difficult, do not worry too much.
It is not often that you will have to make such calculations but
they are important for you in your understanding of the
operating conditions in a hydraulic system.
