It is apparent that internal and external factors act in concert to produce sensitization of nociceptive/pain pathways at peripheral, spinal and cortical levels. This lecture will discuss the clinical implications of these changes and show how the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal pain may be facilitated using a mechanism-based approach. • Multidisciplinary team assessment and management of chronic pain Mike Shipley Chronic pain is difficult to manage. The way an experienced and multidisciplinary team including physicians, psychologists, physiotherapists and nurses assesses the patients and then encourages better coping strategies in groups of patients will be discussed. • Clinical assessment of fibromyalgia Sarah Ryan This presentation will focus on the clinical features of Fibromyalgia and the need for a biopsychosocial approach to assessment • Pain from a therapists perspective Kay Stevenson Kay will use a new referral pathway for patients with musculoskeletal disease to demonstrate how a multidisciplinary approach to patient care can improve patient outcomes and opportunities for healthcare professionals. The award traditionally took the form of a ward round in the appointee’s own hospital. In 1999 it was decided that the Round would be incorporated into the BSR’s Annual Meeting to ensure greater exposure to the membership. 21
