Friends, Faith and Fundraising: A cause to better lives

A paradox is defined as a statement
or proposition that seems
contradictory or absurd but in
reality expresses a possible truth.
Imagine your life is full of joy
and great health only to find out
how quickly it can change with
a simple diagnosis or loss of a
loved one.
What happens when you realize
your life is contrary to what it
once was, and you find yourself
on the opposite end of the spectrum?
Most people ask—why
me? But, when you ask why,
there is no true answer. You are
simply faced with dealing with
this issue at hand.
Last October, Louise Locker
was diagnosed with breast cancer
in the midst of preparations
for the “Elf Louise Christmas
Project.” After giving gifts to
under privileged children during
Christmas for the past 40 years
how could someone so gracious,
kind and caring end up with such
a diagnosis.
“I’ve never said why me, I
always ask what and how? How
am I going to create as much
good out of this,” said Locker. “I
want to embrace it with my heart
and soul and in the midst of the
challenge how can I bring some
good out of this for myself and
other people.”
After spending the night at
Locker’s house to care for her
as he’s done many nights, close
friend Jim Johnston, was on his
way home one morning when he
had an idea to help his friend.
After discussing the idea with his
wife, Johnston enlisted the help
of his friend Chris Duel, also a
close friend of Locker, to get a
list of local celebrities together
to pose for a 1940-50s Hollywood
glamour themed calendar.
“Typical Louise, she never
thinks of herself,” said Johnston.
“Louise agreed to do the calendar,
but only if an organization
was brought in to partner with
her in order to help others as
well.” So, Johnston contacted the
San Antonio affiliate of Susan
G. Komen for the Cure to partner
with the Help “Elf” Louise
Locker Beat Cancer Fund.
At Locker’s request, proceeds
from the project would be split
equally between her Help “Elf”
Louise Beat Cancer Fund and the
