In consonance with the growth of the economy in 2005, peak demand was recorded to
be 13,779 MW with the installed capacity of 19,217 MW which increased the reserve
margin to 39.5%. The value of this peak demand is projected to grow at an average rate
of 7.9% per annum to reach 20,087 MW in 2010. With the expected installed capacity of
25,258 MW, the average reserve margin is expected to decline to a more efficient level
of 25.7%. In 2004, fuel mix in power stations consists the following percentage; natural
gas (59.4%), coal (30%), diesel (1.5%), fuel oil (1.5%) and hydro (7.5%) which leads
to consumption of 17,747 ktoe.
