Mechanics <strong>and</strong> Usage: Correcting Run-on <strong><strong>Sentence</strong>s</strong><br />
Each of the numbered groups below contains between one <strong>and</strong> four sentences.<br />
Write S for single, D for double, T for triple, or H for home run, depending on how<br />
many sentences there are. Then fix all the run-on sentences. Make them into<br />
separate sentences with capital letters <strong>and</strong> periods or compound sentences joined<br />
by a comma <strong>and</strong> the word <strong>and</strong>, but, or or.<br />
1. Baseball has been called our national pastime some people think it is losing ground<br />
to basketball <strong>and</strong> football.<br />
2. Spring training starts when there’s still snow on the ground in the North sometimes<br />
on opening day in April there’s still snow the season lasts until October.<br />
3. The major leagues have exp<strong>and</strong>ed greatly over the last few decades now many<br />
more cities have teams.<br />
4. Some people still mourn the move of the New York Giants to San Francisco <strong>and</strong> the<br />
