Commas are like road signs that tell you to slow down but not to stop. They may<br />
seem hard to place correctly, but they make reading easier. Try your h<strong>and</strong> at<br />
placing comma “signs” in the sentences below where they are needed.<br />
1. Was it Isaac Newton Isaac Hayes or Isaac Stern who experimented with<br />
light?<br />
2. Radio waves X rays <strong>and</strong> light are all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.<br />
3. Come here Luke <strong>and</strong> look at light through this prism.<br />
4. Yes Lucy a rainbow does separate sunlight into different colors.<br />
5. An object can be transparent translucent or opaque.<br />

At Home: The style of most newspapers omits the last comma in a<br />
series. Sometimes the omission leads to a misreading. Look in a<br />
newspaper for sentences with series commas to see if they are clear.<br />
