Read the following paragraph. Rewrite it, omitting all the sentence fragments <strong>and</strong><br />
run-on sentences. Add commas or connecting words where needed. And don’t<br />
forget to add capitals!<br />
The Sperm Whale<br />
The sperm whale is a mighty animal. It can grow to 60 feet. Weigh up to 20<br />
or more tons. It is a good diver it can dive a half-mile deep into the ocean <strong>and</strong> it<br />
can swim back up for air with little effort. The young sperm whale. Is nursed by<br />
its mother for about two years. After that, unlike baleen whales. It does grow<br />
teeth. Then the baby. Stays with its mother <strong>and</strong> the rest of its pod between 7<br />
<strong>and</strong> 13 years. Some pods of sperm whales include extended families. Can<br />
include as many as 50 or more whales.<br />

them in your neighborhood <strong>and</strong> your local newspaper. Jot down<br />
some fragments; then change them into complete sentences.<br />
