A trip to the botanical gardens requires both helping <strong>and</strong> linking verbs. For the<br />
underlined verb in each sentence, write H for helping or L for linking. Then write<br />
each linking verb in a post of the fence at the bottom of the page. You should have<br />
enough to make the link from one side of the fence to the other.<br />
1. We had never gone to the botanical gardens before.<br />
2. The day was perfect, not too warm <strong>and</strong> not too cool.<br />
3. The bus trip seemed endless.<br />
4. At last, we could get out <strong>and</strong> stretch.<br />
5. The gardens looked inviting.<br />
6. As we entered, the workers appeared proud of their efforts.<br />
7. Our teacher said we should be careful <strong>and</strong> neat.<br />
8. Damon whispered, “I will be careful.”<br />
9. After a pause he added, “I am always neat.”<br />
10. I had made notes of flowers I wanted to look for.<br />
11. Some of the flowers smelled great.<br />
12. I could not keep myself from sneezing.<br />
13. I sneezed so loud that I felt embarrassed.<br />
14. I decided I would not let that spoil the day.<br />
15. I hope we will return to the botanical gardens sometime soon.<br />
