Life expectancies have risen dramatically over the past century.<br />

As a consequence, in both the Developing <strong>and</strong> Developed World,<br />

the number of elderly has undergone an unprecedented increase,<br />

with the proportion of the very old in the population<br />

doubling in one generation. Globally, in 1950 there were 214<br />

million people aged 60 or over; by 2025 there probably will be<br />

one billion, a more than four-fold increase. 1 Although, of course,<br />

there are major advantages associated with this trend, there<br />

are also serious costs. Not only are more people surviving into<br />

old age <strong>and</strong>, therefore, increasing their chances of developing<br />

dementia, but those who do so are living longer after its onset.<br />

In the USA, for example, Alzheimer’s disease incidence, currently<br />

some 4.5 million, is expected to increase by 350 percent<br />

by the mid-21 st century, clustering in those states with the<br />

highest numbers of retired “boomers.” It is predicted, for example,<br />

that by 2025, 820,000 elderly Californians, 712,000<br />

Florida residents, <strong>and</strong> 552,000 Texas will be suffering from<br />

Alzheimer’s disease. Other states with high projected patient<br />

numbers include New York, Pennsylvania, <strong>and</strong> Ohio, that<br />
