JUNE TRAILERS Not Wanting to Get Blasted by ''Star Wars,'^ Studios Approach June Gingerly Chances are that "Episode 1/' just two weeks into its release, will still be number one at the boxoffice come summertime. The studios are certainly anticipating this, giving their blockbusters (i.e., Warner's' "Wild Wild West") a better chance next month. Still, June boasts a whopping 49 releases, many of them smaller studio pics and indie fare, and you should never underestimate a film's chance for financial success. Last year at this time, "Godzilla" was expected to still be stomping away. Instead, "The Truman Show" opened and ended up snagging $100+ million and a Golden Globe for Ace Ventura. Buena Vista is the first to tentatively dip its toes into the "Star Wars" tide, releasing "Instinct," which pairs Oscar winners Anthony Hopkins and Cuba Gooding Jr., the first weekend in June. Co umbia is less bold with John Sayles' "Limbo," likely bound for the art-house. And MGM has moved its "The Thomas Crown Affair" remake from 6/1 1 Week #2 sees more action: New Line's "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me"—whose great ad campaign uses "The Phantom Menace" as a marketing tool—and Paramount's John Travolta topper "The General's Daughter." The third weekend in June is an animation festival with Buena Vista's "Tarzan" and Paramount's "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" bgth bowing. An alternative for the adults is "Notting Hill," starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. Finally, Spike Lee's "Summer of Sam" drama from Buena Vista and Adam Sandler's "Big Daddy" (above) comedy from Columbia look to avoid genre conflict with audiences during week #4. Annlee Ellingson JUNE 4 Instinct Think "Gorillas in the Mist" gone bad. "Silence of the Lambs'" Anthony Hopkins, who's rumored to have sworn off acting, stars in this psychological drama as an otherwise refined gentleman whose prolonged habitation with mountain gorillas in Rwanda has sent him over the edge. Pepsi One spokesperson Cuba Gooding Jr. co-stars as an ambitious psychiatrist intent on unlocking the secrets hidden in the deranged man's great mind. Donald Sutherland ("Virus") and Maura Tierney ("Forces of Nature") costar. Director Jon Turteltaub reteams with "Phenomenon" scribe Gerald DiPego and producers Barbara Boyle and Michael Taylor. (Buena Vista, 6/4) Exploitips: "Instinct, " based on the novel "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn, will be the first release for Buena Vista-related Spyglass Entertainment. The start-up company acquired the film from Disney Studios late last year, taking on all financial responsibility, adding it to its nascent library and licensing it in all territories besides the U.S., the U.K., Australia and Latin America, where it will be distributed by Buena Vista's domestic and international arms. Limbo Writer/director John Sayles migrates from "Men with Guns'" steamy Central America to the chilly tundra of southeast Alaska. David Strathairn ("L.A. Confidential") stars in this drama as a fisherman still traumatized by an accident that occurred years before. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio ("Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves") and Vanessa Martinez (Sayles' "Lone Star") co-star as a singer and her daughter who enter his life. "Men with Guns'" Maggie Renzi produces. (Columbia, 6/4) Exploitips: Sayles' prolific repertoire doesn't generally appeal to the mainstream but has developed somewhat of a cult status and should do well at the art-house. In this venue, it'dhelp to book this as the first half of a double feature with Sayles' critically acclaimed "Men with Guns" or the Matthew McConaughey Western "Lone Star" to attract his fans. My Son the Fanatic "Hilary and Jackie's" Oscar nominee Rachel Griffiths stars in this family drama from Hanif Kureishi, the scripter who penned "My Beautiful Laundrette." Pakistani Parvez ("Gandhi's" Om Pari) immigrated to England a quarter of a century ago to pr vide a better life for his family. B his son has different ideas abo living in the West, embracii Islam despite his father's obje tions. Stellan Skarsgard ("Goc Will Hunting") co-stars. Uday; Prasad ("Brothers in Trouble") c rects and Chris Curling produce (Miramax, 6/4 NY/LA) Exploitips: Miramax was /I natic about acquiring this pic the 1997 Cannes Film Festivc = reportedly sidling up at the neg dating table without even havii seen it. Griffiths and Skarsgard a • the marquee names to emphasi. here, especially with GrilTfiths' ri cent Academy Award nomini tion. However, those with mot refined tastes may be interested the Kureishi connection. ?
