(Sony Classics, 6/1 8 NY/LA) Exploitips: SPC beat out Miramax for this lem just before it screened at the Toronto fest ast year, despite the Disney-owned indie's ecent first look deal with Tykwer andArndt's X-Filme. The $1.4 million picture grossed $3.8 million in its first 10 days of release on 'ust 257 screens in Germany and has been generating a fair amount ofpress on this side ot the pond, so expect interest at the art-house. Big Daddy JUNE 25 Slacker-of-the-moment Adam Sandler follows the phenomenal success of "The Waterboy" as a law school grad unmotivated to accept the responsibilities of adult life. In order to impress his soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend, he adopts a six-year-old and in the process learns the joys of fatherhood. Joey Lauren Adams ("Cnasing Amy") and Cole Sprouse (TV's "Grace Under Fire") co-star. Dennis Dugan (Sandler starrer "Happy Gilmore") directs a script by Steve Franks, Sandler and Sandler regular Tim Herlihy. Sid Ganis and another Sandler cohort, Jack Giarraputo, produce. See photo, p. 16. (Columbia, 6/25) Exploitips: Sandler, at this point, can do no wrong. Despite poor reviews (except for in BOXOFFICEA "The Waterboy" was an audience favorite, doing over $100 million at the boxoffice, and the "Saturday Night Live" alum now demands a salary akin to Jim Carrey's. Previously titled "Cuy Cets Kid, " "Big Daddy" should attract the comedian's usual demo— teen boys and young men— in droves, but Sprouse may bring them in even younger, depending on the film's rating. Summer of Sam Writer/director/producer Spike Lee ("He Got Game") takes us back to the summer of 1977, when New York City saw its hip Studio 54 clique clash with a new wave of punk rockers, registered record temps and fell victim to its first serial killer, the Son of Sam. John Leguizamo (HBO's "Freak"), Adrien Brody ("The Thin Red Line") and Mira Sorvino ("At First Sight") lead an ensemble cast of urban misfits who attempt to track down the stalker and cash in on the Mafia bounty offered for Sam's capture. Actors Victor Colicchio and Michael Imperioli help out on the script, with Jon Kilik ("He Got Game," "Pleasantville") contributing to producing duties. (Buena Vista, 6/25) Exploitips: This is yet another opportunity his nametag reads "Sam." Seriously, to mock those silly '70s, costuming your staff in the appropriate big hair and bell bottoms. Your ticket taker's wardrobe is curiously rumpled. Is that blood on his collar? Interestingly, though, Lee's "He Cot Came" didn't last long in theatres, but this project's larger scope and multicultural cast should appeal to a broader audience. (Phaedra, 6/25) The Saragossa Manuscript Polish director Wojciech Has adapts fellow countryman Jan Potocki's erotic and supernatural novel about an Austrian captain who comes across a manuscript while his troops sack the Spanish city of Saragossa. In it lies the story of his family. Zbigniew Cybulski stars. Tadeusz Kwiatkowski scripts. (Cowboy, 6/21 LA, opened 5/21 NY) Exploitips: Originally released in blackand-white Cinemascope almost three decades ago, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola are presenting a new print of "The Saragossa Manuscript, " restored to its complete three-hour length and dedicated to the memory of the Grateful Dead's jerry Garcia, who was a big fan of the film.
