20 年 前 に 打 上 げたNASAの 大 気 観 測 衛 星 「UARS」( 重 さ 約 5・6ト
ン)が23 日 前 後 に 大 気 圏 に 再 突 入 し、その 破 片 が 地 球 上 に 落 下 する
見 通 しである。 破 片 落 下 場 所 は 特 定 できていないが、 今 のところ 日 本
を 含 む 北 緯 57 度 から 南 緯 57 度 の 広 範 囲 が 対 象 。NASAは、 人 口
密 度 などをもとに 計 算 し、 破 片 が 誰 かにぶつかる 確 率 は3200 分 の1と
宇 宙 へと 運 ばれ、 高 度 約 580キロの 軌 道 を 周 回 していた。2005 年 に
運 用 を 停 止 後 、 徐 々に 高 度 が 下 がり、 現 在 は、 高 度 225~250キ
ロ。NASA 試 算 によれば、 機 体 大 部 分 は 大 気 圏 突 入 時 に 燃 尽 きるも
のの、 最 大 158キロ・グラムの 構 造 物 を 含 め、 部 品 26 個 ( 計 532キ
ロ・グラム)が 燃 え 残 り、 地 球 上 へ 落 下 。

UARS expected to reenter late this week
NASA is predicting that a 20-year-old satellite will reenter the
Earth's atmosphere on Friday, posing a very small but non-zero
risk to the public. The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite
(UARS), launched by the space shuttle in 1991, is in a decaying
532 kilograms, will survive reentry and reach the surface. NASA
has estimated that there is a 1-in-3,200 chance that debris from
the satellite would injure anyone, with the most likely outcome
that the debris falls in the ocean.
