BOSTON
Extensive repairs are being made to the
Opera House on Washington Street, the
former Saxon Theatre, which was initially
operated by Sack Theatres before it was sold
to U.S. Cinemas and later to Loews. The
board of the Opera House of Boston voted
to proceed with a plan to fix mechanical and
safety problems and to continue work on the
theatre's complete restoration. In its heyday,
the Saxon Theatre presented road show and
first run films. It was originally the B,F, Keith
vaudeville and motion picture theatre, a Boston
landmark.
LIVINGSTON, N.J.
The opening of its Colony Theatre in this
city marks Movie Entertainment, Inc's entrance
into motion picture exhibition. Formerly
operated by United Artists as a single
screen theatre, the Colony saw a May opening
as a tri-plex house. Total seating capacity
for all three screens is approximately 500
seats. Features include hi-back, rocker, recliner
chairs with cup-holder on the armrests,
stereo surround sound utilizing ceiling speakers
as well as a computerized boxoffice and
refreshment stand pads (this last feature uses
the "In Touch" option of having concession
advance sales along with tickets at the window).
Complex to launch a State-wide program
called "Meadowlands ROCK-90" (Reaching
Out for Concert Kids in the 90s), Created by
the Meadowlands, ROCK-90 is a safety/educational
program aimed at young concertgoers
and their parents. In conjunction with
the program, Loews Theatres launched a
Public Service Announcement featuring Bon
Jovi on all their 113 New lersey screens May
1st. The 60 second spot comments on the
need for responsible concert-going.
PHILADELPHIA, PA
Philadelphia Variety Club presented a special
benefit performance of the 1991 String
Band "Show of Shows" at Philadelphia Civic
Center, Also, lanus Productions, Inc, of suburban
Plymouth Meeting, Pa produced a
promotional film trailer at the Variety Club
Camp for Handicapped Children for the Variety
Club's Wishing Well campaign and to be
shown at all the area film housed. The trailer
included a pitch by Monty Hall, which was
shot in the lobby of a United Artists theatre
where Hall was joined by six handicapped
children.

is one of the lucky ones.
He was one of six dogs we rescued
before they could be sold to a major
dog dealer for experimentation.
The interstate transportation of lost and
stolen dogs destined for laboratories is a
nightmare for these animals— many of them
beloved companions— even before the experiments
begin. It is estimated that UX1.000 dogs
per year make the journey to dog dealers and
experimenters.
Since 1980. People for the Ethical TVcatment
of Animals has become this nation's most effective
and hard-hitting organization when it
comes to exposing and stopping animal cruelty,
especially in laboratories.
Suffering animals need knowledgeable and
assertive fighters on their side— they're not all
as lucky as Oliver

NEW YORK, N.Y.
The new Loews Village Theatre VII at Third
Avenue and 1 1th Street in Manhattan opened
in May, At a cost of $17,3 million, the Village
Theatre VII is the first in a series of three new
Loews complexes in Manhattan The house
features a total seating capacity of 2100 and
offers state-of-the-art equipment (including
luxurious seats equipped with cup holders,
Dolby Stereo in all seven auditoriums and
70mm capabilities). Also, the theatre is the
first and only THX sound presentation in Manhattan
and the country's first multi-story, seven
level cinema. Along with its seven screens,
there are five concession stands and twelve
escalators as well as an elevator and total
accessibility for the handicapped
Variety's Children's Charity in this city
raised $2,018,503 in April during its annual
telethon broadcast live from the Winter Carden.
Performers for the event included Penn
and Teller, Debbie Gibson, Buster Poindexter,
Bob McCrath and Julie Budd, Funds from
Variety are dispersed to several New York
area organizations, including those for underprivileged
children, kids with cancer, newborns
with need, children with AIDS, children
with facial deformities and more.

Loews Theatres will team up with rock singer
Ion Bon )ovi and the Meadowlands Sports
CLEVELAND, OHIO
Columbia Films, operating under the name
of Triumph Releasing Corporation, |ust left
this city to move to Chicago, It was the last of
the film distribution organizations remaining in
Cleveland, Fifteen employees working under
manager Dave Spero are now without jobs.
The 71-year old Coventry Theatre, closed
since 1988, will reopen and be managed by
Morry ZyrI and building contractor Charles
Zuchowski, owner of the property. According
to Zyrl, who recently lost his lease at the
Colony Theatre, the theatre will be renamed
The Centrum and will be divided into a threescreen
complex The largest screen, with 500-
600 seats, will be named the Roxanne T,
Mueller Theatre, in honor of the Plain Dealer's
late film critic,
Zyrl plans to program first
run, commercial movies, art and foreign films,
and some revivals,
Al Saluan has taken over the Colony
Theatre and plans a five screen cinema He
hopes to keep the giant screen that made the
Colony a Cleveland showplace Shelly Silverman
will remain as manager Saluan also
owns the Lake, Mapletown and Fairview
theatres,
