The Fields, Fishing Harbour, and Windmill improvements increase the amount <strong>of</strong><br />

food in the colony. Harvested food is kept in the city stores, where you can<br />

purchase it for your ships.<br />

• Barracks – Gives bonus experience to soldiers garrisoned in forts, and allows<br />

the training <strong>of</strong> experienced sailors and <strong>of</strong>ficers.<br />

• Storehouse – Increases food storage capacity.<br />

• Church – Increases the morale <strong>of</strong> the colony's citizens.<br />

• Naval Academy – Sailors and <strong>of</strong>ficers in taverns will be more pr<strong>of</strong>essional,<br />

and any soldiers garrisoned in forts get an experience bonus.<br />

• Expedition – A one-<strong>of</strong>f event. The Expedition sends a team to explore the<br />

depths <strong>of</strong> the island in search <strong>of</strong> gold or silver veins for mining:<br />

- Silver mine – Increases funds to the colony.<br />

- Gold mine – Further increases funds to the colony.<br />

If your colony starts running out <strong>of</strong> money, you can always subsidise it from<br />

your own stash. Click the “Gold in Treasury” button on the Colony Management<br />

screen, and use the familiar 'Big Slider' to specify the amount you wish to<br />

transfer to the colony. In the same way, you can also leech- err, borrow funds<br />

from the colony.<br />

Governor<br />

When appointing an <strong>of</strong>ficer to the post <strong>of</strong> Governor <strong>of</strong> a colony, he should<br />

ideally be well- versed in the following skills:<br />

• Leadership – Influences the overall speed <strong>of</strong> the colony's development.<br />

• Trading – Influences the speed at which the colony generates money.<br />

• Cannons – Influences the reload speed <strong>of</strong> the colony's fort's cannons.<br />

• Accuracy – Influences the accuracy <strong>of</strong> the colony's fort's cannons.<br />

• Fencing – Improves the experience <strong>of</strong> the colony's soldiers, increasing their<br />

chance <strong>of</strong> successfully defending the place from attack.<br />

You can replace your governors at any time. For this purpose press the “Assign<br />

Governor” button, which is accessible only if you have free <strong>of</strong>ficers. In the<br />

window that appears next, select the new candidate, click “Assign”, and the<br />

incumbent fat-cat will be booted out in favour <strong>of</strong> the fresh blood. It's one <strong>of</strong><br />

those things that games do so much better than real life...<br />
