Game Options.<br />

Appearing down the left side <strong>of</strong> the screen, these allow you to tailor different<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> the game experience to your liking:<br />

• Nation aggression.<br />

Defines how <strong>of</strong>ten nations will move against colonies, and how mercurial they<br />

are in their dealings with each other.<br />

• Nation progress rate.<br />

Defines the speed <strong>of</strong> AI colony development.<br />

• Starting colony state.<br />

Defines how well developed colonies are at the beginning <strong>of</strong> a new game.<br />

Higher levels <strong>of</strong> development make colonies richer, but also that much harder<br />

to capture.<br />

• Relations with player.<br />

Defines how many nations are at war with you at the beginning <strong>of</strong> a new<br />

game:<br />

No enemies – All nations, as well as the Coastal Brotherhood, consider you<br />

to be friend, and welcome you at their ports with pleasure.<br />

Normal – You are at peace with the majority <strong>of</strong> the nations, but there are<br />

still some governors who wouldn't mind seeing you swinging from the yard<br />

arm....<br />

All enemies – All nations and free captains - except for your own -<br />

consider you to be a hostile target, and will actively hunt you down.<br />

Beware!<br />

Note: If you are at war with a nation, its ports will be closed to you, and its<br />

fort's guns will open fire at your approach. However, the city <strong>of</strong> the Coastal<br />

Brotherhood is always open to you, irrespective <strong>of</strong> your relationship with<br />

pirates.<br />

• Encounter frequency<br />

Determines the number <strong>of</strong> random encounters you'll meet when at sea.<br />

• Event frequency<br />

Determines the frequency <strong>of</strong> random events, such as epidemics, colonist<br />

movement, etc.<br />
