YOUNG GUNS | Tassie badly defeated by Vic Metro Tasmania played Division 1 state Victoria Metro at Bellerive Oval last Saturday in slippery but firm conditions. The team were optimistic after a first up win against Queensland and a solid performance by the Mariners in 2009 against Vic Country in the same fixture. As with all games played by Tasmania and particularly against Division 1 states, the team went into the game with a mindset that the visitors would be provided with a physical, one on one contest that would test the commitment of the Victorian team. This was not the story of the first quarter, with the Victorians establishing an early ascendency in their general play that led to many scoring opportunities. Vic Metro midfielders were given too much latitude with Captain Mitchell Wallis, son of ex- Footscray Captain Steve Wallis leading the way with 11 first quarter possessions. Tasmania did recover towards the end of the first quarter with Joe Groenewegen goaling after a free kick, but at quarter time Tasmania trailed Vic Metro by 17 points. The second quarter saw a similar trend with Vic Metro players much cleaner in congestion with their handling of the slippery ball than Tasmania and more damaging with their use of the ball when in possession. At half time Vic Metro had extended their lead to 40 points. Despite the best efforts of Tasmania the second half saw Vic Metro extend their lead to eventually run out 96 point winners. Tasmania showed glimpses of good play but were outclassed on the day by both a more skilled and more committed unit. For Tasmania, it is appropriate to recognise the defensive efforts of some players. Captain Josh Green tried hard in the midfield with 9 tackles, 7 hard ball gets and 9 clearances. Adam Green and Marty Allison had 7 tackles with Jacob Gillbee gathering 6 tackles and 4 hard ball gets. The Tasmania U18 team plays the Northern Territory at Aurora Stadium at 11:00am today. Last Saturday the Tasmania U16 team held their final practice game against an invitational Tasmania U17 team. The U17 team was selected from players who have shown good form at Tasmanian State League colts or senior level and who are not currently Tasmania U18 academy members. The game was played at a high tempo and after a scrambling start in frosty conditions some excellent passages of play were executed by both teams. Thank you to TSL U18 coaches: Zane Littlejohn (North Launceston), Ricky McCulloch (North Hobart) and Matthew McGee (South Launceston) for their assistance with the preparation and coaching of the Tasmanian U17 invitational team. The Tasmania U16 team will travel to West Sydney for the Nationals between July 3 -10. 16
