T H E W H I S T L E B LOW E R | Umpires achieve interstate honours This week we feature the 3 Umpires who represented Tasmania in last week’s interstate match between Tasmania and Queensland, namely Nick Foot, Adam Robinson and Damion Oxley. Nick Foot is 22 and is from Hobart. He has been umpiring for 9 years having started in the Boundary discipline and then moving over to the Field. Since then he has had tremendous success including officiating in 2 National Championships. Last year, Nick was appointed to the TSL Senior Grand Final which he says has been the highlight of his career. This season Nick has been selected to be the Tasmanian Representative in the Australian Sports Commission Scholarship Program. This course covers all aspects of umpiring as well as personal development goals. As part of the program, Nick will conduct coaching sessions with Field Umpires as well as coordinating umpiring courses with high school students. Nick will also mentor a young up and coming umpire during the season. This will entail giving feedback on match days and offering assistance and advice on a regular basis. Nick says that his long term ambition is to reach AFL level. Adam Robinson is 26 and is from Launceston where he has lived for the past 4 years after moving up from Hobart for University studies. He has always been a Boundary Umpire and is now in his 7th season. Adam’s father John is also involved in umpiring and is presently a Goal Umpires Game Day Coach after having a distinguished career including being on the VFL Squad for 3 seasons. Adam says one of his career highlights was umpiring a SFL Regional Seniors Preliminary Final with his father officiating as a Goal Umpire. The biggest influences on Adam’s career have been Paul Bidgood, Cameron Lee and Symon Bird who have all been involved in Boundary Umpiring at both an officiating and coaching level. Adam says his main ambition is to umpire a TSL Senior Grand Final. Damion Oxley resides in Oakdowns near Hobart and is 29 years of age. He commenced Goal Umpiring in 1999 and is currently in his 12th season as a Goal Umpire. Damion lists his best 2 appointments as the 2009 TSL Senior Grand Final and the 2007 VFL Senior Second Semi Final. Overall he has officiated in 150 TSL and SFL senior matches. Damion says the biggest influence in his career has been Bob Webb who former goal umpire and is now the Tasmanian Football Umpires Association (TFUA) Goal Umpires Coach. Damion is engaged to be married and his fiancée is Claire Stanwix. He works as a Parking and Information Officer with the Hobart City Council. 30
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Hall of Fame – A major undertaking providing rich rewards AFL Tasmania’s Board of Management is very proud of the initiative and efforts of our past and present members, our management and staff, corporate partners and a number of specialist consultants in providing, firstly, the Tasmanian Team of the Century, and since 2005 the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame. The football family’s warm embrace of our efforts to recognise in perpetuity the rich history and the contribution of many to our great game provides compelling validation of our efforts. In 2010 we will once again welcome a number of new inductees, 12 in fact, a memorable game, a legendary team, and a great club for their contribution to the game. When considering those who have been inducted we also have the opportunity to elevate to a higher level of recognition those whose contribution is most significant. In this regard we will honour a new Icon in 2010 and elevate a further 3 players to the Legend status. I hope that you may join us in celebrating the induction of all new members to the Hall of Fame at the gala function to be held again at Wrest Point on Friday 2nd July 2010. As always the event is designed to enable the football family to come together and share, remember and celebrate those who have given or achieved in our game beyond just participating. Football remains the heartbeat of so many of our communities, particularly in winter; in this way our game is more than just a sport or a game. It is significant part of the social, commercial and cultural fabric of Tasmania. This year the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame will be brought to us all by a team of dedicated AFL Tasmania staff and our specialist consultants to ensure the continued high quality of this important recognition program for our sport and our state. AFL Tasmania’s General Manager Scott Wade will lead the team that includes: • Daniel Smedley – manages all historical research, facility development and the production of all the media articles, the souvenir record and newsletter and database management. • Andrea Goodwin and Bill Sorell – managing all aspects of the induction function. • Wendy Kennedy and Paul Yeomans – development of the audio visual production at the induction ceremony. I encourage all members of Tasmania’s football family to come along to this fantastic night and I look forward to seeing you at the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame ceremony or at the football in the near future.
