Specifications: Common Royalty Distribution: EDI format specifications Version 2.0, Revision 4 1 - Introduction This document describes the Common Royalty Distribution Format, an Electronic Data Interchange based format designed to facilitate the reporting of distributed royalties for society-to-society and society-to-member applications. 1.1 - Model Characteristics CRD is a “forward-reference” model, whereby the metadata for entities are supplied prior to their being referenced by subsequent transactions. For instance, a transaction group is specified to uniquely report the metadata for recordings and audio-visual productions. These are referenced by their identifiers in the musical works exploitation transactions which occur “later” in the file. The use of identifiers eliminates the repetition of the program and production metadata for each exploitation reported. While the forward-reference model may seem to be complicated at first glance, it essentially reflects the results that most recipients would wish to derive from their import processing of a flat “spreadsheet” format. 1.2 - File Structure The CRD file structure is based on fixed-length columns (fields) and fixed-length records. This means that the size of all records will be the same as the size of the largest, with smaller records being “padded” with either spaces or “low-values” (hex value 0). While a variable-length record structure does have space-saving benefits for mass-storage devices, it introduces programming overheads of varying significance on different platforms. In any event, it is assumed that files would normally be compressed (WinZip) prior to transmission; compression algorithms would require minimal space for all the “spare” blank positions at the end of the records. 1.3 - File Naming CRD file names must comply with the standard specified in SR06-2010-R5 “CIS Guidelines of Electronic Data Interchange, Version 2.0”. Names are constructed using the date, time, receiving and sending society codes. The extension contains the CRD EDI version number. A complying example appropriate to this document (version 2.0): CRD 20100519 131200 008 052 . 020 1.4 - Reporting Granularity (Aggregation) Societies (and members) will have different requirements, and abilities, with regard to processing of distribution information. Some may wish to receive very detailed (granular) information to a level that includes every individual usage of music. Some societies may not be able to report at this level, due to the manner in which their usage data is stored; and some recipients may prefer not to receive such detailed information. The CRD format allows royalty and performance information to be reported at an agreed level of granularity. That is, parties to the exchange will determine between them that they CRD09-1005R4 5/80
