I am delighted to introduce our latest guide to leisure services for the

over 50s.

The council is not only committed to investing in sporting facilities

and activities, but also to ensue we provide a wide range of high

quality services for the borough’s older residents.

The council has invested more than £40m in leisure with two new

leisure centre including a 50m pool opening early 2010.

This guide will give you some idea of the diverse range of activities

available to you in Hillingdon.

You will see that Hillingdon has something to suit all tastes, abilities

and energy levels and I hope that you will take full advantage of the

services available to you as a resident of our borough.

Leisure Link

The Hillingdon Leisure Link card provides savings on leisure

activities to a wide range of concessionary groups. The card is

welcome at a number of leisure, art and library facilities and will

help you to save money. If you are over 60, disabled or receive an

income related benefit you can apply for a leisure link card.

You don’t even have to live within the Hillingdon boundaries.

Forms are available at sports centres or on-line at:

How to use this guide

The programme detailed in this leaflet will give you some idea

on what’s on offer and the diverse range of leisure activities

available to you in Hillingdon.

Even if you have never exercised before, it is never too late to

start feeling the benefits.

Please check with your GP or health visitor before

commencing with any form of exercise.

To use this guide just follow these simple steps:

2 Note the venue code in brackets

3 Use the venue code to find the details of location and

telephone number

4 Contact the venue to ensure places are available for the

class you want

Free swimming for over 60’s

Hillingdon are offering free swimming for everyone aged

60 years and over, from 1 April 2009. For one year there

will also be free swimming lessons to help brush up on

your skills or get you going.

Free swimming is available at Highgrove Pool, Hayes Pool and

William Byrd Pool (see list of venues for details). All you have to

do to get your free swim is turn up and prove you are over 60.

You can do this by producing any of the following:

• Leisure Link card

• Bus pass (Freedom pass)

• Passport

• Driving Licence (paper copies accepted)

• Citizen Card

Free swimming lessons

We want everyone to be able to take advantage of this offer, even if

you can’t swim (yet!). All three pools will be offering free places in

their regular adult swimming lesson slots. If there is a high demand,

extra places will be made available as the programme allows.

Healthy Walks

If you enjoy walking and would like to meet new friends and improve

your fitness in a safe environment then why not try a Hillingdon

Healthy Walk.

The walks are led by a trained person and take place throughout the

borough. Walking can help reduce the risk of high blood pressure,

diabetes, coronary heart disease, bowel cancer, osteoporosis and

stress.

Pétanque at Hillingdon sports and

Leisure centre

This relaxing game is played at Hillingdon sports centre. The concept

of the game of pétanque is simple and similar to bowls, i.e. resting

your boule closer to the jack than your opponent.

The club play every Thursday. Tea and biscuits are provided as well

as company and competition. For further information please contact

Compass Theatre

The Compass Theatre in Ickenham has a popular Prime Movers

class every Thursday between 11.00am and 12.00pm.
