I am delighted <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduce our latest <strong>guide</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>leisure</strong> services <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>over</strong> <strong>50s</strong>.<br />
The council is not only committed <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> sport<strong>in</strong>g facilities<br />
and <strong>activities</strong>, but also <strong>to</strong> ensue we provide a wide range of high<br />
quality services <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> borough’s older residents.<br />
The council has <strong>in</strong>vested more than £40m <strong>in</strong> <strong>leisure</strong> with two new<br />
<strong>leisure</strong> centre <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a 50m pool open<strong>in</strong>g early 2010.<br />
This <strong>guide</strong> will give you some idea of <strong>the</strong> diverse range of <strong>activities</strong><br />
available <strong>to</strong> you <strong>in</strong> Hill<strong>in</strong>gdon.<br />
You will see that Hill<strong>in</strong>gdon has someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> suit all tastes, abilities<br />
and energy levels and I hope that you will take full advantage of <strong>the</strong><br />

Leisure L<strong>in</strong>k<br />
The Hill<strong>in</strong>gdon Leisure L<strong>in</strong>k card provides sav<strong>in</strong>gs on <strong>leisure</strong><br />
<strong>activities</strong> <strong>to</strong> a wide range of concessionary groups. The card is<br />
welcome at a number of <strong>leisure</strong>, art and library facilities and will<br />
help you <strong>to</strong> save money. If you are <strong>over</strong> 60, disabled or receive an<br />
<strong>in</strong>come related benefit you can apply <strong>for</strong> a <strong>leisure</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k card.<br />
You don’t even have <strong>to</strong> live with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hill<strong>in</strong>gdon boundaries.<br />

Free swimm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>over</strong> 60’s<br />
Hill<strong>in</strong>gdon are offer<strong>in</strong>g free swimm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> everyone aged<br />
60 years and <strong>over</strong>, from 1 April 2009. For one year <strong>the</strong>re<br />
will also be free swimm<strong>in</strong>g lessons <strong>to</strong> help brush up on<br />
your skills or get you go<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Free swimm<strong>in</strong>g is available at Highgrove Pool, Hayes Pool and<br />
William Byrd Pool (see list of venues <strong>for</strong> details). All you have <strong>to</strong><br />
do <strong>to</strong> get your free swim is turn up and prove you are <strong>over</strong> 60.<br />
You can do this by produc<strong>in</strong>g any of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Bus pass (Freedom pass)<br />
• Passport<br />
• Driv<strong>in</strong>g Licence (paper copies accepted)<br />

Free swimm<strong>in</strong>g lessons<br />
We want everyone <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> take advantage of this offer, even if<br />
you can’t swim (yet!). All three pools will be offer<strong>in</strong>g free places <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir regular adult swimm<strong>in</strong>g lesson slots. If <strong>the</strong>re is a high demand,<br />
extra places will be made available as <strong>the</strong> programme allows.<br />

Healthy Walks<br />

Healthy Walk.<br />
The walks are led by a tra<strong>in</strong>ed person and take place throughout <strong>the</strong><br />
borough. Walk<strong>in</strong>g can help reduce <strong>the</strong> risk of high blood pressure,<br />
diabetes, coronary heart disease, bowel cancer, osteoporosis and<br />
stress.<br />

Pétanque at Hill<strong>in</strong>gdon sports and<br />
Leisure centre<br />
This relax<strong>in</strong>g game is played at Hill<strong>in</strong>gdon sports centre. The concept<br />
of <strong>the</strong> game of pétanque is simple and similar <strong>to</strong> bowls, i.e. rest<strong>in</strong>g<br />
your boule closer <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> jack than your opponent.<br />
The club play every Thursday. Tea and biscuits are provided as well<br />
