<strong>Swimming</strong> Policy<br />

All children under the age of eight years old must be accompanied by a person (deemed<br />

responsible by the Office in Charge) who is 16 years old or over.<br />

This person may be responsible for up to two children under the age of eight.<br />

Children under five years old must be supervised in the water on a one-to-one basis<br />

regardless of whether they are able to swim or not.<br />

Those responsible for children must ensure that they keep sight of the child/children at<br />

all times while they are in the <strong>pool</strong>.<br />

All non-swimmers (adults or children) are restricted to safe areas of the <strong>pool</strong>. Any<br />

swimmer wearing armbands is not permitted beyond the ‘boom’.<br />

Swimmers must be advised to take account of any illness or disability that may affect<br />

them during their visit to the <strong>pool</strong>. Swimmers are advised to discreetly inform the Officer<br />

in Charge of any illness/disability or any specialist assistance they may require.<br />

Non-swimmers and poor swimmers must not go out of their depth (with the exception of<br />

very young children who are supervised on a one-to-one basis who are out of their depth<br />

in the shallowest areas of the <strong>pool</strong>). In such circumstances, the non/poor swimmer is<br />

advised to wear approved swimming aids.<br />

A non swimmer or poor swimmer may be defined as someone who is not able to swim a<br />

length of the <strong>pool</strong> (stress free) and tread water for 30 seconds to the satisfactory of the<br />

staff on duty.<br />

Any swimmer wearing any type of clothing other than conventional swimwear is<br />

considered as a potential risk to the safety of the swimmer and/or the lifeguard in the<br />

event of a rescue.<br />

In line with HSE recommendations the following dives are strictly prohibited:<br />

• Running dives<br />

• Backward dives<br />

• Dives without hands in front of head<br />

• Chaotic/unruly diving<br />

• Somersault entries<br />

• Bombing<br />

All diving is prohibited into water depths less than 1.5m.<br />
