Types <strong>of</strong> Emergencies: Severe Weather<br />

Severe Weather<br />

What: Severe weather is any weather condition (e.g., high winds, snow)<br />

that may cause injury to students and staff or damage to structures.<br />

Different types <strong>of</strong> weather call for different types <strong>of</strong> action.<br />

Why: To protect human life, ensure safety and protect property.<br />

Who: The Site Administrator or designee must take action to respond to<br />

severe weather conditions (i.e., Lockdown/Shelter-in-Place).<br />

How : For Extreme Weather Watch:<br />

Weather Radio:<br />

The Weather Radio is to<br />

be located in the school<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice and turned on at<br />

all times.<br />

All school sites should<br />

have a NOAA weather<br />

radio. If not, contact the<br />

Safe Schools department<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Cruz</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

<strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> at<br />

466-5600.<br />

Keep the Weather Radio on in the school <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

Continue monitoring<br />

The Site Administrator should listen to alerts from<br />

the city/county and take any necessary action<br />

Make an announcement to move all students and staff to their<br />

classrooms<br />

Use a megaphone to direct parents, bus personnel and visitors to<br />

come inside the building from the school grounds<br />

Direct teachers to take attendance and report missing children<br />

Do NOT activate the fire alarm<br />

Make announcements to keep teachers and staff informed <strong>of</strong><br />

current status<br />

Decide whether to have students Lockdown/Shelter-in-Place<br />

Close all exterior doors<br />

Close all interior doors<br />

Move children and staff from rooms on the perimeter, glass-walled<br />

rooms or rooms with skylights to designated safe areas within the<br />

school (e.g., hallways, basement).<br />

Get emergency supplies<br />
