When a Student Makes a Suicide Attempt<br />

The Site Administrator must take action to ensure the student is safe<br />

Provide immediate first aid and call 911 if indicated<br />

Call the District <strong>Office</strong><br />

Remove all students from the area<br />

Notify the student’s parents/guardians immediately<br />

Consult with a mental health pr<strong>of</strong>essional to evaluate<br />

the student and make recommendations<br />

Legal Issues<br />

Several court rulings provide best practice decisions guidelines for Site Administrators<br />

and staff to follow when intervening with students that are suicidal.<br />

Parents must be notified when a student is suicidal (Wagon Mound Public<br />

Schools, District <strong>of</strong> New Mexico, 1998)<br />

❏❏<br />

School districts must <strong>of</strong>fer adequate supervision <strong>of</strong> students that are<br />

suicidal (Wyke V. Polk <strong>County</strong> School Board, 1997)<br />

❏❏<br />

Even if a student denies suicidal intent, and collaborative teams<br />

suspect otherwise, the obligation is to notify parents (Eisel<br />

V. Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>of</strong> Montgomery <strong>County</strong>, 1991)<br />
