Porter of Nelsonville, Ohio, by Jack Steadman, Dawson Springs, Ky.—Strand TheOftre to Arlhur Morris and Sam Maples by I H, Meadows Plan Pittsburgh Amusement Center PITTSBURGH—Norbert Stern, who pioneered outdoor theatres in this area, is busy here with a community center project which will include a theatre, a drive-in theatre and 22 storerooms. Leveling of 30 acres of ground was started recently on Route 51, one mile from the Clover Leaf identified as a mile from Bill Green's tavern, for the new shopping and amusement center. The project will be "as modern as tomorrow" and will have exclusive features and materials. The indoor theatre will have a 1,600-seat auditorium. The drive-in theatre adjoining will have accommodations for 1,200 automobiles. All the latest outdoor theatre appointments and equipments will be utilized, Ernest Stem, son of the project director, said. There will be a large parking area for shoppers and patrons of the indoor theatre and the 22 stores. Norbert Stern opened the first drive-in theatre here at the entrance to South Park a decade ago and he owns and operates other outdoor theatres in western Pennsylvania and Ohio. Associated with him in certain of the drive-in theatres are his son Ernest and a nephew George Stem. U-I Will Release 17 In 6-Monlh Period NEW YORK—Universal-International has set tentative release dates for 17 pictures for the coming six months, according to William A. Scully, vice-president and general sales manager. The schedule includes three J. Arthur Rank productions. Four are in Technicolor. This makes an average of three a month, instead of the two features released each month since November 1948. The May releases are: "The Lady Gambles," starring Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Pi-eston and Stephen McNally; "City Across the River," which introduces "The Dukes," six newcomers, and features McNally, and "Arctic Manhunt," featuring Mikel Conrad and Carol Thurston. June will see the release of the Rank production, "One Woman's Story," starring Ann' Todd and Claude Rains; "Illegal Entry," starring Howard Duff, Marta Toren and George Brent, and "Take One False Step." starring William Powell and Shelley Winters. Set for, July are: "Calamity Jane and Sam Bass," in Technicolor, starring Yvonne de Carlo and Howard Duff; the Rank production of "Woman Hater," starring Stewart Granger and Edwige Feuillere, and a picture starring Howard Duff, Shelley Winters and Dan Duryea tentatively titled "Johnny Evans." August releases will be "Blue Lagoon," the Rank production in Technicolor, starring Jean Simmons; "Sword in the Desert," starring Dana Andrews, Marta Toren and Stephen McNally, and "Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff." Tentatively set for September are: "Yes Sir, That's My Baby," in Technicolor, starring Donald O'Connor, Charles Coburn and Gloria DeHaven, and "Come Be My Darling," a Neptune production starring Robert Montgomery and Ann Blyth and featuring the stage star, Jane Cowl. October releases set so far are: "Western Story," in Technicolor, starring Yvonne De- Carlo, Charles Coburn, Scott Brady and John Russell, and "Abandoned." starring Gale Storm and Dennis O'Keefe. All but the lastnamed picture, now in work, are completed. U-I Sets Three Campaigns On Forthcoming Films NEW YORK—Universal-International has several exploitation campaigns lined up to follow the big party which took place at Las Vegas. Nev., May 8. There will be premiere ceremonies for "Calamity Jane and Sam Bass" at Dallas June 8, followed by regional openings at Houston, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. More than 250 dates have been set in the southwest. Also on June 8, "Illegal Entry" will open at Washington, D. C, with a tieup with the Department of Justice planned. Marta Toren will make a personal appearance. "Take One False Step," starring William Powell and Shelley Winters, has been chosen as the company's bond premiere picture. FBI Recovers Print NEW YORK—The FBI has recovered a stolen 16mm print of "Standing Room Only" (Parat In Atlantic City.
