H-Bomb Area Boasts
7 Drive-In Theatres
(Continued from preceding page)
up in the area—particularly New Ellington—
the nearest new town in the county. Part
of that city is a trailer town, but permanent
business buildings and homes are being built
rapidly.
Aiken, before the advent of the H-bomb
plant,
was a sleepy, quiet winter resort town.
Now it is a traffic-mazed, overcrowded city.
When local theatremen are questioned
about the boom, they reply that business is
spotty. Many of the workers rise at 5 a. m.,
then drive bumper-to-bumper some 25 miles
to work. The same traffic conditions prevail
at each change of shift and workers are
usually too tired to seek amusement. But on
the days when they have leisure time, the
theatres are packed as the workers seek out
recreation.
Pine Bluff Ministers
Protest Malco Airer
PINE BLUTF, ARK.—The Pine Bluff Ministerial
Alliance has addressed a letter to the
mayor and city council protesting the proposed
installation of a drive-in directly opposite
the Matthews Memorial Baptist church
on Highway 79. The theatre, which is planned
by Malco Theatres, is being opposed because
the ministers say it would cause traffic congestion
and attendant noise and confusion and
also create traffic hazards which they maintain
would interfere with the work and worship
of the church.
The letter continues, "We do not wish to
Impugn the motives of the officials of Malco
Theatres but we must vigorously protest the
establishment of this theatre at said location."
The letter was passed unanimously by the
Ministerial Alliance and signed by Solon T.
Hill, president, and the acting secretary.
