Jesus risks His reputation 

and credibility by taking 

the part of sinners in a world 

more ready to condemn than 

to pardon, to punish than 

to forgive. There comes a 

time in everyone’s life when 

you’re caught and you can’t 

get away with it (whatever 

it may be) anymore. That 

time comes for a woman, 

and the it in this case is being 

caught in adultery? The 

scribes and the Pharisees 

brought a woman taken in 

adultery. Having set her in 

the midst, they told Jesus, 

‘Teacher, we found this 

woman in adultery, in the 

very act. Now in 

our law, Moses 

commanded us 

to stone such. What then 

do You say about her’? (Jn 

8:3-5) She’s nameless, she’s 

shameless, and she’s caught! 

Makes you wonder 

where those scribes and 

Pharisees were to catch her in 

the act? Legalists, hypocrites, 

the publically pious but 

privately promiscuous 

inhabit every age, every town 

and every church. They are 

always quick to criticize but 

slow to compliment. Their 

words roll off wagging 

tongues in gossip and 

breathe in whispered slurs. 

They specialize in character 

assassination and undermine 

the spiritual authority of 

pastors, all in the name of 

truth that were it 

turned on them, 

would induce a 

flood of excuses, 

rationalizations 

and protestations 

of their sins being no worse 

than those of others. They 

are grace-killers and Jesus 

reserves a special warning for 

them when He sees them or 

smells them coming: You 

offspring of vipers, who 

warned you to flee from the 

wrath to come? (Matt 3:7); 

Take heed and beware of the 

yeast of the Pharisees and 

Sad’ducees (Matt 16:6); Woe 

to you, scribes and Pharisees, 

hypocrites! Because you 

shut up the Kingdom of 

Heaven against men and 

women; for you don’t enter 

in yourselves, neither do 

you allow those who are 

entering in to enter. (Matt 

23:14). How can such as 

these be saved if they persist 

in their self-deceptions of

religious righteousness, 

social superiority, or moral 

perfection? Is it any wonder 

that they rejected Jesus, the 

Messiah, Who’s very Name 

means God Saves when they 

don’t perceive themselves 

in need of salvation or a 

savior. Clinging to ritual 

and rule like a life-raft, they 

bob above a bottomless abyss 

to which they willingly, 

gleefully consign others but 

which waits for them. They 

are the most transparent, 

pitiable of creatures. 

The woman caught 

is shocked! Not at being 

caught, certainly. Any more 

so than was the Samaritan 

Woman at Jacob’s Well when 

Jesus told her about her 

sinful lifestyle: You said well, 

‘I have no husband,’ for you 

have had five husbands; and 

he whom you now have is 

not your husband. This you 

have said truly. (Jn 4:17-18) 

Truth...that is the threshold 

of the Kingdom of Heaven: 

You will know the truth, and 

the truth will make you free. 

(Jn 8:32) Truth about God, 

truth about ourselves, truth 

about His forgiveness and 

truth about a sinner’s need 

for mercy. The shocking 

thing is that Jesus put His 

Name on the line for her, 

as He does every day for 

every self-confessed sinner, 

for you and for me: If you 

knew the gift of God, and 

Who it is that is saying to 

you, “Give Me a drink,” 

you would have asked Him, 

and He would have given 

you living water. (Jn 4:10) 

Hypocrites who risk little 

gain little. Prostitutes and 

sinners who risk much gain 

much. Most certainly I tell 

you that the tax collectors 

and the prostitutes are 

entering into the Kingdom 

of God before you. (Matt 

21:31) Why? Because they 

publically confess what the 

self-righteous publically 

deny. Jesus can save an 

honest sinner; He can do 

nothing with a dishonest 

one. Which one are we? 

Thank God that Jesus 

is not a Pharisee. Our selfesteem 

and our relations 

with the people around us 

draw strength and purpose 

from our relationship in 

truth with Jesus Christ. The 

stronger that relationship, 

the stronger our faith, the 

more clearly we are willing 

and able to see ourselves as 

God sees us, and the more 

compassionate, merciful and 

life-giving our relationships 

become with others, especially 

the lost and scorned. The 

extraordinary thing is that 

Jesus desires us at all and gives 

us (who do not merit it) more 

than we could ever deserve. 

Nicodemus risked much 

to hear the truth from Jesus: 

That which is born of the 

flesh is flesh, and that which is 

born of the Spirit is spirit. Do 

not marvel that I said to you, 

‘You must be born anew’. (Jn 

3:6-7) Nicodemus risked 

his prestige as a member of 

the religious establishment 

by going to Jesus. He and 

his family risked being 

ostracized by society and guilt 

by association with Jesus. 

The Son of man has come 

eating and drinking; and you 

say, ‘Behold, a glutton and 

a drunkard, a friend of tax 

collectors and sinners!’ (Lk 

7:34) What are you willing 

to risk for Jesus? Better to live 

in a hovel on the outskirts of 

town and society in the will of 

God than to live in a mansion 

or a cathedral outside the will 

of God! 

How easy it is to dismiss 

The Lord, how hard it is to 

forsake the sin! Remember 

the woman of the city who

washed Jesus’ feet with her 

tears, dried them with her 

hair and anointed them with 

precious ointment? Listen 

to the self-righteousness of 

the witness: Now when the 

Pharisee who had invited 

Him saw it, he said to 

himself, “If this Man were 

a prophet, He would have 

known who and what sort 

of woman this is who is 

touching Him, for she is 

a sinner.” The pharisee 

despised her, condemned 

her and dismissed her as 

one of those people. Jesus 

loved her, forgave her and 

encouraged her to be one 

of His people. In being 

loved, love was born in her, 

for the Lord and for herself: 

Therefore I tell you, her 

sins, which are many, are 

forgiven, for she loved much; 

but he who is forgiven little, 

loves little. (Lk 7:47) How 

unlike us. How conditioned 

and parsimonious our love 

is when compared to His. 

Sometimes we give love as 

a receipt; always Jesus gives 

love as a down-payment. 

He loves us enough that we 

want to change, to leave off 

sinning and begin real living: 

And He came and preached 

peace to you who were far 

off and peace to those who 

were near; for through Him 

we both have access in one 

Spirit to the Father. (Eph 

2:17-18) 

The desire to change 

is not enough; we need 

the strength. Jesus said to 

the woman caught in the 

act: Neither do I condemn 

you. Go your way. From 

now on, sin no more. (John 

8:11) This is the gift of 

the Spirit. We are not only 

born again in the Spirit, but 

through the Spirit we grow 

in strength, little by little, 

and develop the will to resist 

the temptation to turn back 

to our old. And the purpose 

of God in reconciliation 

is always that we go to the 

place where Jesus is: Father, 

I desire that they also, whom 

Thou has given Me, may 

be with Me where I am, to 

behold My glory which Thou 

has given Me in Thy love for 

Me before the foundation of 

the world. (Jn 17:24) 

We can propose much 

and achieve little without 

God’s help, especially in 

the area of sin. This season 

marks our own death and 

resurrection: dying to the 

flesh, rising in the Spirit. We 

love Jesus enough because we 

see His love for us in every 

breath He takes. He risked 

everything, even death, to 

love us into life. He loved 

us a great deal to forgive us 

a great deal. Even His dying 

breath was for us a Word of 

forgiveness and summons to 

a new, abundant and real life: 

Father, forgive them; for they 

know not what they do. 

(Lk 23:34) We don’t even 

know what we do to God, 

to ourselves, and to each 

other without Jesus Christ. 

We all share in the love of 

God poured out for us on 

Calvary and on the altars of 

our Catholic Church where 

Calvary is made present 

through the power of the 

Spirit and the Word of God. 

In Holy Communion the 

Love of God gives birth to 

love in us and the capacity 

to love Him in return, a 

loving relationship so great 

that we can transcend the 

narrowness of our flesh and 

change our lives into the 

image of The Son of the 

Living God: For Christ 

also died for sins once for 

all, the righteous for the 

unrighteous, that He might 

bring us to God, being put 

to death in the flesh but 

made alive in the spirit. (1 

Pet 3:18) 

Let’s have a little mercy on 

each other and be a help, 

not a hindrance, to a sinner 

who is caught. It might be 

us next time: Brothers and 

Sisters, even if one is caught 

in some fault, you who are 

spiritual must restore such a 

one in a spirit of gentleness; 

looking to yourself so that 

you also aren’t tempted. 

(Gal 6:1) AMEN.

PREPARING FOR LENT: 

Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence. 

Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. 

Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age through 

age 59. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two 

other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be 

taken according to each one’s needs, but together they 

should not equal another full meal. Eating between 

meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk 

and juices, are allowed. 

Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. 

On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that 

when health or ability to work would be seriously 

affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt 

concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest 

should be consulted. 

Fasting, Almsgiving and Prayer are the three 

disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens 

should undertake these practices seriously in a 

spirit of penance, and of preparation for baptism 

or of renewal of baptism at Easter. 

Easter Candle 

The Easter Candle is lit at all Masses on Pentecost 

Sunday, and, if possible, at Evening Prayer. The Easter 

season ends with the conclusion of Vespers. The Easter 

Candle is then placed near the baptismal font/pool 

where it is displayed with honor. In the baptismal rite, 

the candles of the newly baptized are lit from the Easter 

Candle. Ordinary time resumes Monday following 

Pentecost.

Thomas More's Got Talent! On July 6th during 

the St. Thomas More Feast after the 5:30 p.m.

Lent purpose for parents: 

Teaching children to be generous and grateful 

In a materialistic, consumer 

oriented culture, we face a real 

challenge in teaching thankfulness 

and contentment to children. 

They are conditioned to believe 

they are entitled to everything 

they want — now! Kids have 

also come to believe they should 

always get the biggest and best. 

The Center for a New American 

Dream reports another disturbing 

trend known as the nag factor. Its 

recent surveys found that nearly 

60 percent of kids nag their 

parents for a toy or a privilege 

even after being given a no. In 

fact, 10 percent of all 12- and 

13-year-olds admit they will beg 

their parents more than 50 times 

for products they've seen on TV. 

Grateful 

Christian parents are called to 

cultivate character traits such as

thankfulness, generosity and selfsacrifice. 

The Bible commands us, 

"Give thanks in all circumstances, 

for this is God's will for you in 

Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 

5:18). Jesus warns us, "Be on your 

guard against all kinds of greed; 

a man's life does not consist in 

the abundance of his possessions" 

(Luke 12:15). And Paul describes 

greedy people as idolaters who 

will not inherit the kingdom of 

God (Ephesians 5:5). 

One of the most effective ways to 

combat the cultural mind-set is 

by modeling a grateful attitude. 

Verbally thank God on a regular 

basis, even for simple things like a 

roof over your head and food. 

Also, do your best to model 

gratitude in your other 

relationships: friends, relatives 

and co-workers — and not only 

when they do something special 

for you. Let others know how 

much you appreciate them simply 

for who they are. Express that 

kind of unconditional gratitude 

to your spouse and children as 

well. 

Generous 

You can help your kids learn to be 

generous by serving others who 

are less fortunate. Christmas time 

is ideal for service projects. Your 

family might volunteer to serve 

Christmas dinner at a local rescue 

mission or visit residents at a 

nursing home, singing carols and 

delivering Christmas cookies. 

The majority of children receive 

a boatload of new toys each 

year. They soon lose interest in 

most of these toys, which wind 

up collecting dust in a closet, 

basement or storage bin. One 

family I know has instituted a 

Christmas tradition in which 

each of their kids chooses several 

of his or her old toys to donate 

to a homeless shelter or a local 

charity. They deliver the toys as a 

family the week before Christmas, 

so their children can see where 

their toys are being donated and 

experience the joy of giving away 

their possessions. 

Christmas also provides an 

excellent opportunity to start 

sponsoring a poor child in a 

developing country through an 

organization such as World Vision 

or Compassion International. 

Our family sponsors a little girl 

in Indonesia. When our children 

are old enough, we plan to take a 

short-term missions trip to Java to 

meet her. 

Finally, while your kids are still on 

vacation, set aside an afternoon 

for them to write handmade 

thank-you notes to the friends 

and relatives who gave them 

gifts. Even young children can 

participate by decorating simple 

cards with crayons, stickers and 

rubber stamps. Make this a family 

project, as you help your children 

learn to develop the "language 

of gratitude" through words and 

pictures.

checks will be collected at the Faith Formation
