St. Thomas More, 1478-1535: Statesman-Martyr And Our Parish Patron We have a powerful friend and example of moral integrity in St. Thomas More, the patron-saint of our parish. As we celebrate his life at the Eucharist, know that he will be with us there . Listen to his prayer: Give me the grace to long for Your holy sacraments, aml especially to rejoice in the presence of Your body, sweet Savior Christ, in the holy sacrament of the altar. Amen. He is depicted in ar t and form as the English Lord Chancellor carrying a book or an axe. It is the latter that inspired the image of our patron in the vestibule of the Church. There he also holds a palm branch, the venerable symbol of mart)'Tdom , whk h he won after imprisonment in the in famous Tower of Lon Cion anCI public behearling by the royal executioner for refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy to King Henry VIII f 15 34]. Why? Read the text of the Oath required by Henry and his daughter-successor, Elizabeth I [ 1559]. Failure to swear was treason, so silence brought judgment : I, A. What lloes it llVlLil to know that there is a God, which you not only believe by Faith, but also know by rellson: what floes it avail that you know Him if you think little of Him? He was a deliberate man and never compromised his Catholic Faith for the sake of private gain. He was that rare politician who permitted no distinction between his public duty and conduct and his
