WESTMINSTER HEIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN
BUINESS & COMMERCIAL
GOAL 5: IMPROVE THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CONDITIONS ALONG THE 49TH
STREET SOUTH AND CENTRAL AVENUE CORRIDORS.
OBJECTIVE 5.1: To support existing businesses and seek to attract new businesses to increase the variety of
the economic base.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
5.1.1 The neighborhood association should provide resource information to the business owners about the
City’s Business Assistance Center (BAC) and available programs.
5.1.2 The neighborhood association will continue to invite the businesses to join the Westminster Heights
Neighborhood Association and / support association activities.
OBJECTIVE 5.2: Improve the appearance of the commercial corridor.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
5.2.1 The neighborhood association should explore the possibility of a consistent facade and streetscape
treatment along the 49 th Street Corridor in conjunction with the City of Gulfport Redevelopment Plan
and the Greater Childs Park Strategic Plan.
5.2.2 The neighborhood association should, support and participate in the 49 th Street business association.
5.2.3 Residents should continue to report code violations within the commercial areas to the City via
www.stpete.org (Action Online), Mayor’s Action Center (727-893-7111) or Codes Compliance
Assistance (727-893-7373).
COMMUNITY IDENTITY & APPEARANCE
GOAL 6: IMPROVE THE PHYSICAL APPEARANCE OF THE WESTMINSTER HEIGHTS
NEIGHBORHOOD.
OBJECTIVE 6.1: Enhance the aesthetics of the neighborhood streets with landscaping
RECOMMENDATIONS:
6.1.1 The City should install crape myrtles along 55 th Street to continue crape myrtle plantings around the
perimeter of the cemetery.
6.1.2 The City will install crape myrtles along 5 th Avenue South.
6.1.3 Review the feasibility of a traffic median on Central Avenue west of 49 th Street to include landscaping
and Westminster Heights neighborhood identity sign.
6.1.4 a. Association will continue working with the owners of the cemetery property to proceed with plans to
install a fence, wall or other barriers along 55 th Street South to eliminate the cut through vehicle
traffic in the right-of-way along 55 th Street South/cemetery.
b. The City will identify alternative solutions to minimize and hopefully eliminate cut through traffic
from 5 th Avenue South & 55 th Street South through the cemetery/right-of-way.
