4.2 Access Arrangements
There is no need to apply directly to City & Guilds for access arrangements. However, if learners
require units in Braille or modified versions of the units (that cannot be arranged locally), then this
must be applied for at least three months before the learner is due to start the unit. The threemonth
lead-in is necessary because the unit will often need to be prepared individually.
Centres must not order modifications to assessment materials unless they are confident that the
learner will be ready to attempt the unit at that time.
Summary of permitted adjustments - Mathematics Skills
Learners can have access to all forms of equipment, software and practical assistance, such as a
reader or a scribe that reflect their normal way of working, provided that these do not affect the
reliability or validity of the units or give the learner an advantage over other learners undertaking
the same or similar units.
The table below only lists provisions that should be regarded as an access arrangement. Please
note all learners may use relevant ICT applications to produce their work.

Each component of Mathematics Skills eg number, handling data and measure, shape and space,
can be completed in any order. Leaners are able to attempt and achieve each component at
different levels (known as a spiky profile) according the rules of combination restrictions (see
Structure section). Learners can achieve a full award in each component subject to the rules of
combination.
